Hi All

I bought a 2004 a209 (CLK 320) with 86k miles on it on Sunday. When I picked the car up everything worked like a dream and I fell in love! However yesterday we had prolonged heavy rain, the good news was I couldn't find any leaks form the roof. The start of the bad news was a damp patch at the front of the drives door on the door trim itself. The carpet was dry so looks localised to the door somehow. But that was just the start of my issue. This morning I have driven the car and it is going crazy, symptoms are:

Error message for the convertible roof (Visit workshop)
Error message for display (Visit workshop)
Error SRS faulty (Visit Workshop)
Error Key not recognised (Visit worksop) yet I can start and stop the car on the gear shiftier button and open doors/boot ETC.
Both drivers and passengers electric seats not working
Passenger airbag light flashing on and off
Passenger seat belt extender (the motorized arm that comes out) constantly going in and out unless I clip the safety belt in.

I am assuming (hoping) water has got in to a SAM module and I can dry it out. Right now feeling very sick about buying such a beautiful car that may turn out to be worthless.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice before I face down a potentially large bill at the dealers?

Many thanks

Paul

Firstly was this a private or trade sale?

If trade then you have legal redress.

Secondly, do not contemplate going to a dealer, the costs would be extremely high for diagnostics and repair. You list having a W211 so presumably you have a good independent specialist you use? If not then it may help if you post where in the UK you are based so you may receive some local recommendations.

Check out both SAM units for water ingress, the rear is prone to problems from leaks around the hood mechanism as well as the hood seals.

Hi DSM10000

It was a private sale and agreed the dealer will have to be my last resort. I am in Southport Merseyside and I think MSC Prestige is my closest indie, its just do I drive the car out there or not in terms of creating more damage.

Can you tell me where the SAM units are located so I can take a look?

Thank you for your help

Paul

I doubt you will cause any damage by driving it, if it starts and runs and changes gear OK then do not worry.

The front SAM should be under the bonnet, it is part of the main fuse / relay block. The rear should be behind a trim panel in the boot area, probably on the left. That is where they have been on my C Class and E Class salons.

Do you have an OBD fault code reader? If so it may be worth making a note of any codes and then trying to erase them and see which, if any return?

Front SAM on a clk is on the drivers side and should have a cover that drains the water away as well as the clip in cover, otherwise water will get in.
Check it is there and not blocked.

I shall check it out when I get home and joy of joy's its raining again!!!

Do you have any other ideas on what could be causing it??

Also check the plastic cover on the passenger side covering the battery under the bonnet , below it is the air in take for the heater , I had a 208 CLK convertible fill with water from there while away on holiday .
Check your drains from the windscreen are all clear too while your at it

SOLVED!! Can't believe it. I was putting the kids in the back of the car and pulled on the handle to tilt the seat and the headrests dropped as it should. That surprised me as it wouldn't work from the door control....which I then tried and the seat moved forward. I then started the car and all faults have gone.

THEN I look under the seat and there is a control module that the seat was resting on trapping a wire as the seat was on its lowest setting. See photo. So moved the seat up a bit and all has been fine for the last hour.

At the a weekend I will investigate further because I think I can see a bare part of a wire which I think was earthing on the seat frame. Does anyone know what this module is?

Thank you for all your help if it isn't this I will post the next steps up. But if I don't post again you know it's fixed
