One of the blank buttons on the dash is badly scratched and I was looking to repalce it. It is one of the ones up high on the centre console where the heated seats and alarm deactivation buttons live. I suspect it was the dealer but cannot be doing with the hassle or taking it back.

Does anyone know if I can buy a single button and poke out the old one with some force, or is it a removal of the whole unit job?

Many Thanks,

Simon

what button do you need?

Oh, a blank one? oops.

To get to the buttons isnt that difficult, I have recently done this as I changed all the switch lighting to BLUE led :)

remove the aircon switch, you need the radio keys for this.
lever the switch surround/trim up from the bottom, then it just pulls out.

the switch array has 2 zip ties clamping it in, these are the reusable ones so dont cut them.

then around the switch array there are small clips that keep it all in place on the trim, release these and ease out the swtich as you go, then your there :)

It is one of the blanks, not a proper button. Presumably if I had ordered electro-buttock-massaging-ipod-digital-workflow-reinventthewheel-guidance-seats or something then the space would be used.

So it is just the blanking I am after, which is why I hope I can poke the old one out with a screwdriver and clip in a new one.

I have some spare switches that I used for testing my LED upgrade, but my car doesnt have any blank ones but I imagine it will be the same as i described above.

I am not sure if my car is different (W209) but from top to bottom I have -> buttons (inc blank) then the COMAND and the aircon controls are right at the bottom.

ah, sorry, I am talking from a w208 point of view

Cheers anyway.

According to benzworld.org the unit should just 'pull out'...

Last time I did that I ended up on my back in the middle of the street clutching a headlight from a Nissan Micra which I had just ripped all the wires off :(

This might prove different :-)

You need to release the lefthand side by the cup holder and kind of see saw it out using a hooky type tool in the right hand side of the block.

Hi Simon when i spoke to Merc about a year ago regarding the buttons on the C Class dash that look the same. I was told they are one unit and they cost around £120 per set of 8 whether this is the same for the CLK i dont know. lets hope not.

Thanks, yes I think it is. I spoke to the dealer as I am 99.9% sure they did the damage while replacing the COMAND unit and the bank of buttons are one unit that needs to be replaced. So a job under warranty at the first service methinks.
