Hi All, looks like I have to replace part of the exhaust on the car. front right hand cat by the engine (this is looking from under the car on a ramp) which joins into two other boxes (are they cats as well?) which then join and bolt to a centre silancer that runs to the back box. Got enough silancers on it!!! Took it into a local exhaust centre (not Kwik Fit) as it started to rattle over the weekend to find a bracket thats bolted to a cross momber had rusted off from the exhaust pipe. The guy took it off so it wouldn't rub againts the pipe. He then thumped the system with his hand only to here more rattling. He says the front cat has broken up inside which can happen after 8-9 years which is how old the car is. Just wondered anybodys thoughts on replacing. Manufacture or good quality pattern part? Anybody no any good after market makes? Want to try and keep it quite. Also any idea of what sort of job it is to replace. Cheers all Lockking

my uncle just got quotet £1,500 to replace the full system by mercedes as the bracket is rusted. I'm also looking for full exhaust system. If you want the cat alone then you can look at eurocarparts..
cat - Euro Car Parts UK?s No.1 Car Parts Retailer

they got some starting from £184.47

you can always give them a call & they'll tell you which is the best one.

Hi Shala, sorry no reply till now. Been away a few days. Not sure if it is the cat that rattling. Think it might be a heat shield or the likes.Done a 300 mile round trip over the weekend and got 32mpg average. A few people have said that the fuel consumtion would get bad if the cats went but im not sure on that. the bit I need if it is gone is £700 form a dealer and £540ish from Euro. I'd only fit the Merc one as the cheaper ones can be noisey compared with OE. OE are much more sturdy built. Might get a new bracket made and welded back on the exhaust which would hold the system firmer inplace and might stop the rattle. The exhaust is still good. It was just the bracket that rusted away.

Hi,
My exhaust on my C230K broke where you are describing and was simply refabricated and welded back, that was approx. 80,000 miles ago and still have no issues, There is an aluminuim shield under the car covering the transmission tunnel, you sure this hasn,t fallen down against the exhaust? it has on mine at the moment and makes a hell of a rattle when starting and sometimes idling.
The rattle from a CAT is normally described as a tinkling sort of sound, as the ceramic contents of the CAT breaks up.
