CLK Owners Beware!

Righty,

It's clear that I did not use enough Silicon fluid

Mine opened fine this morning, and the temp was -5 last night.
Having looked at the window seals, the windows go up inside the rubber seal meaning any water which runs of the roof, can only run down the outside of the window, it cannot get between the glass & the rubber seal.

Which is not surprising seeing as cars are tested in arctic conditions far worse than we ever get before going on sale. If the CLK had a problem Mercedes would have found it during these tests at -30 or whatever they do them at.

I surely have to take your words as truth :)

But, my car on the occasions we have frost here, has been a pain to get into.

It could be of course that the humidity here is greater and that my car is more exposed to draughts.

But it surely happens and next time (if I remember) I shall video it on my phone :D

But please, do not consider that I "slate" the Great North. Anyone who wears a skirt for fun gets my respect!

There are different types of frost and ice. Some of this is related to humidity. There is also the wind effect to consider. The winds in the far north of Scotland come from a different area of the world. So the air inside has different qualities.

You also need to consider how clean your windows are.

Both of which add up to the fact that a car in the South of England can, and do, freeze shut, when a car in the far north, at a lower lower temp will be free to open.

However, it can also be reversed.

So even tho this advice should be used for any car with uses a rubber seal, the OP has a CLK which naturally would mean he is offereing advice for that particular model.

I think I have covered everything there!

I treat the rubber seals on my car at least twice a year. If nothing else it makes 'em look nice! :D

I have had this problem on many cars over the years, problem is I live on the west coast and it's often very humid but just above freezing in the evening and then freezes overnight. Any perished rubber or slight gap draws in water that then freezes solid. Worst I've had was an '86 Montego. I have been using Merc sliding compound on the SL and not had the problem at all yet. :thumb:

Hi Mirras,

Do I ask for sliding compound at the parts department?

Being cheeky but do you have the part number?

Oh and I am glad I am not alone :D

It's A000 989 36 60 and cost about £35 for a very small 30ml bottle but I have done all the SL roof, boot and door seals several times and still have half a bottle left. :thumb:

:bannana: got that, Whitenemesis :)

Pretty sure that I am not using enough! So I shall get out there at the weekend and get more into the roof channels and rear window sill seals!

MB Mould Lube (A000 989 36 60 ) is £28.67 online from MB Inchcape

The baron speaketh the truth, MB do know about it and warn against it on the W208 tin tops. Also the same with a lot of other cars with frameless glass, Imprezza also a problem. Nothing to do with persihed or misaligned seals, design flaw from new which both MB and Subaru admit to.

MB warn against what exactly?

sorry if i've misunderstood.

I think Ian is saying that MB are aware of the problem but offer no real solution.

ie. we owners have to take the rough with the smooth :)

Bit like the body rattle in summer that goes away in autumn when the metalwork contracts just a wee bit.

BTW, I have stumped up my £31.86 to MB Bath and my product should be delivered to them in a couple of days!

The only problem I've ever heard Mercedes admitting to is wind noise at high speed with pillerless windows, never any problem with frost. Maybe someone could post what Mercedes have said?

This is why i hate framless doors, dont get the advantage they offer yet all the woes they do....main reason I'd always have a 4dr over a 2dr

You're still too young, wait for your mid life crisis & your opinion will change!:eek::crazy:

If you're referring to the part that says if the windows are iced up the door will not close, well on mine if the windows are iced up the door still opens & closes.

That is what I was referring to.

That is what they say. Not me.

Makes no difference to me. But I guess someone will come on and say theirs gets frozen shut.

And seeing as Mercedes have mentioned the fact these windows can get stuck in the up position, one would assume there is the potential that the doors can get stuck too.

Only car I ever had stuck was a FORD. and that was because it was rubbish and the door seal had a leak. And I lived in Yorkshire at the time, where everyone knows, it is colder than anywhere else on earth.:D
