Probably a thickie's question, but hey ho here we go:

The rear tyres on my 2005 CLK320 are done for and need changing. I'm no great speed merchant and mileage is largely motorway. The current MB approved tyres on the car are Continental Sport Contact 2 245/40/17/W - nice but pricey even on-line; whereas Falkens are under £100 each and Sava are just over £80 each, so what is the difference and am I at risk of compromising safety - I note in my handbook a clear directive that for safety reasons i should only use Merc original or approved tyres (with run flat characteristics). all guidance appreciated

Got Falken 452's on the back of my 430 and there is at least one member with them on the back of his E55 ...

Personally i love them , bags of grip , they wear well , and aren't noisy .

Quite a few members on here use them.

Thumbs up from me !

The more expensive tyres generaly perform better in most areas. ie - grip / wet grip / comfort and noise.

Michelin pilot sports are about the best, but about the most expensive.
I've just changed from these to Falkens due to some good recomendations. I wouldn't recomend anything else 'lower' down the scale.

.

I can vouch for Michelin Pilot Sport also (245's on rear and 225's front) my 17 inch wheels.
Excellent tyres but BIG ££££££££ - £340 for rear pair last month = ouch!

Another CLK user here that uses Falken 452 XL - a very good tyre.

Do you have run flats at the moment?
As for using the MB original tyres, they can change between different tyre manufacturers for any number of reasons, I would not worry about that too much.

For what it's worth, I would avoid Bridgestone Potenzas, they are not as good as the Conti's. Goodyear F1 GSD3's are good also.

so it sounds like Falkans are a good bet but will this impact the car's sensors?

Why would they ?

If you buy the same size that is on it now , it's all the same ...

Many thanks guys Falkans it is then - sorry to overcomplicate things - i did say it was a dim question! Regards GF

Get them from www.camskill.co.uk

Cheapest around , they will deliver and you will need to pop down to the tyre place and bung them a drink to fit them ;)

I use Conti Sport Contact 2- brilliant in the wet. At the end of the day its your decision what you fit - but I'd also check out the reviews done by autocar and the like to get a better idea of their extreme performance (only on the basis that if you are ever in a nasty situation its better to know they perform well). Of course I hope that never happens..
