Hi,

So - my CLK55 AMG 2003 (118,500 miles) has just dumped a lot of oil out of the exhaust and is pushing pressure into the coolant when cold.

The garage has told me it could either be the engine oil cooler or head gasket - and the only way to tell is to replace the oil cooler and try. Does this sound right?

If it is the head gasket - any idea on cost in the UK? Guess it could be the end of my CLK after 9 years of fun!

Thanks

If oil is getting into the exhaust, it's going through the engine. Changing the oil cooler won't alter that. I'd say you have a head gasket failure.

Find another garage, preferably a respected MB indie, where either they know what they're doing, or they won't take you for a mug and try to lift your leg.

Sounds like a head gasket failure - and a catastrophic one at that. On the plus side, it should be detectable with a compression test. Narrow it down to one bank from which exhaust emitted oil (assuming no balance pipe).

Take a drive down to Prestige Car Service - Horndean, only an hour and a bit from London and you’ll get a PROPER answer. Best to be sure with something like this, and these guys really are one of the bests. I’ve had very good experiences with them. They are also forum sponsors. @BlackC55

Whereabouts are you in London? I wouldn't want to drive the car all that far with a head gasket failure...

If you are in London, get in touch with Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow.
Reputable indy with experience of AMG engines.

What’s the rest of the car like? Condition wise, rust, upcoming maintenance etc.

Need to take a pragmatic viewpoint on things like this IMHO. What’s caused this to happen - any recent work on the cooling system (radiator, water pump, coolant change etc?)

I mean, the M113 is generally pretty bullet proof, to the point I would suspect some sort of traceability to whatever has caused this to happen if it is indeed a leak from something like a head gasket. Otherwise could be severe engine damage, cracked head/block or something like that.

Years ago you could pick up 5.4 M113s for £1000 +/- but I suspect there won’t be so many around these days. Even at a specialist this could be quite a large bill, even for the strip down to determine what has actually happened and why.

Good luck, and fingers crossed for you if you decide to repair - you must be quite attached to it after 9 years :)

Start a new thread on this.

Also search on Om271 engines for information about the fragile cam chains and sprockets etc.

Do not piggy back on to one that isn't connected to your issue or you will dilute the number of relevant responses you get 👍

Never heard of M113 getting head gasket failure.
Must have been a dud?

How long have you owned the car?
9 years?
