Hi All,

I'm seriously considering trading the CLK 220 CDI for a CLS 350 CDI, love the CLK but just want more power!..... the 350 CDI has ample grunt and like the CLK is a great looking car with pretty good mpg...IMHO

Any advice on issues to be aware of or look for with the CLS?

Cheers

John

Sorry not much help but if you have a choice go for one with parking sensors, may go for the Grand Edition they come as standard and has a factory chip that gives you an extra 75 bhp. Also some have had the dimond cut alloys referbed on the cheap and just painted silver, IMO that really spoils the look. Happy shopping !!

Grand Edition owner for 8 months, absolutely love it. Bought as approved used so nothing to worry about for 12 months.
Slight issue with gear changes at low speed 2nd to 3rd being lumpy, dealer performed a s/w update as a fix but not driven it yet to confirm.
Only other problem has been 3rd brake light LED blowing, again under warranty.
Great car, comfort and speed, with good road presence.

I have spent the last couple of months debating between a CLS or another CLK. I am most often in the car on my own, sometimes with my wife, occasionally with the dog and vary rarely with other passengers.

Mainly because of this, I decided to stick with a CLK, but went for (picked it up yesterday!) a very late model 320CDi Sport with lots of toys on it (sunroof, heated/vented/memory/orthopedic/nappa seats, comand, phone pre-wire, parktronic, black ash trim... oh, and did i mention a sunroof!).

So far (almost 50 miles later), I can say without hesitation that I made the right choice. If you're looking for a bit more oomph than a 220CDi, the 320CDi has it in spades.

There is a superb-looking 320CDi CLS for sale with only 37k on the clock, but for my purposes I felt it was just too big and (dare I say it) a little "old". Mid-life crisis, here I come!

Not meaning to go off topic but I am having similar problems and woud be good to know if that update sorted it..

I know just how hard that choice is, I'm test driving a CLS 350 CDI Grand Edition this weekend. During the week its normally just me, but the weekends usually include 3 or 4 tripping to see family. Have regular trips down to Rugby with work so a cruiser that will take 4 adults in comfort is what I need.
Will see how I feel driving the CLS:thumb:

What happened...?

I have a CLS350 Grand Edition and love it. Hasn't missed a beat in a year. I had the lumpy gearbox issue arise but a simple throttle body reset fixed that and I also had a 4 wheel alignment done as they can 'settle and wear tyres unevenly'. I want to get the windows darkened but apart from that it's perfect. Surprisingly quick too.

Car looks good, there is a same colour one close by me in Surrey, it looks as good for real, though I have not always been a fan of the matt finishes.

I too found I had to re align the wheels in my 219 annually, it improve ride each time all round...havnt had the 218 long enough yet to know if it will be similar, wait and see :D

The CLS is simply a great car.:bannana:

Another fan of the Grand Edition here. I've had mine a year and I'm still loving the combination of style / power / economy... So much so that I still drive with a cheshire cat grin even after 12 months.

Only hiccups thus far have been a snapped OSF spring that was changed under tier 1 warranty. I'm told modern suspension springs snapping is a very common fault these days, I dunno if that was a spin story to make me feel better or the truth.

Only other item I've had done is an update to the COMAND sat nav maps.

*EDIT* Someone above mentioned that the Grand Edition comes with parking sensors as standard, I'm afraid that's not the case. They come with a fair amount of goodies but Parktronic is not one of them, so if that's important to you then check your future purchase has that option. They do come with an extra 50BHP and 50 Nm increase in torque over stock though and that is very addictive! (223BHP --> 272BHP).

Go for it, You won't regret it the CLK is a lovely motor but not in the same league as a CLS especially the Grand Edition
Bite the bullet and enjoy :thumb:

What's the difference between the Grand Edition and the standard ones?

What's the difference between the Grand Edition and the standard ones?

The main difference was the addition of the Brabus diesel engine tuning box, adding 48bhp and some torques. Other differences were the 18-inch AMG five-spoke alloy wheels with a Titanium Grey finish, the front grille louvers and headlamp housings are in a matt silver, GE floor mats and leather as standard (although never seen one without it) and COMAND.

Steve, if you don't mind me asking, how/where did you get the maps updated and what did it cost ?

Thanks

Andrew
Hi Andrew!! :)

I still love that matt finish of yours :bannana:

I got my COMAND updated at my local dealership. Only cost me £35. Mercedes is running a promotion where map upgrades cost £90 and my dealer runs a scheme where the cost of an MOT is fully reimbursed on subsequent work carried out by the dealer, e.g. service work / repair work / or in my case work requried to perform upgrade. £90 - £55 = £35 price.

No brainer for £35 quid.

In addition to the points Paddcomp has mentioned, I believe bi-xenons were another GE standard and of course all CLS GE's are de-badged on the boot (de-badging being a no cost option).
