I have just bought and CLS and didn’t realise that Xenon weren’t standard as my old E class.
I have bought a aftermarket kit and was wondering will the bulbs fit straight in or will I need to modify the holder?
Has anyone fitted these? Will appreciate a guide or advice please.
Thanks guys

Have a search around the forum; if you want to stay on the legal side of the law you'll need to change the entire housing/lens as well & ensure you have wipers on your lights.

^ as above and have a search.

Basically no they will not be legal (MOT time). You can do it of course thats up to you.

Two MOTs passed since swapping mine. Kit from ebay, 50 quid. And that means they've lasted 18 months, whereas high output Halogens at 15-20quid a set only last 3 to 6 mths. So cheaper as well!

And using only 70 watts of energy, so saving energy (about 20kw/h per year saving, probably a couple of litres of diesel)

^ that's the same as be having my slighly illegal spaced number plates passed over 10 mots on various cars.

Doesn't make it right....you still know its wrong :) like I said its up to you...

(remember the group buy I orginaised for HIDs??? and the posts regarding it...)

I'm now back to standard and sleep well at night :)

Bare in mind people that the W211 E Class and the CLS have projector housings even if it has halogen lighting, so with a HID kit the beam will still be sharp and close to real xenons however the leveling and wash wipe is a different story.

It has headlight wash system.

What i need to know is, how does the bulb fit in? is it same as the standard?

Heh - I bought them through your group buy!

Despite having non-standard lamps fitted inside my headlights, I still sleep at night, the bonus is that I can also see better when driving at night!

Interestingly, if you have airmatic, and headlamp wash, does that stop people whining on with the "illegal" "immoral" "inconsiderate" "stupid" "pointless" "unsafe" argument

Topped of by a projector housing which all W211's have yes pretty much. The main concern is when a HID kit is installed into a car without special reflectors or a projector housing as the beam pattern is scattered everywhere and is very blinding.

i thought if the glass was clear and not patterned they should be OK, as the clear glass will not disburse the light

Incorrect this infact is actually worse. When lenses are clear theres often a projector lense involved or a sheilded type of bulb housing such as on the new shape Civic's. Remember the W210, W202, W140 & early W220 had xenon as a option and all used a frosted lense however the the bulb housing is sheilded to ensure a sharp cut of beam pattern.

on my W202 i have got a 6K H7 55KW HID kit.... it just passed MOT at Mercedes-Benz on friday.... he thought they wer illegal but they was right on the limit of 55w! woop! i get a lot and i mean A LOT of people flashin at me thinkin im drivin with full beams on! i dont have self levellin or Headlamp wash/wipe which is apparently the legal requirment and Benz still passed it so it cant be that illegal :D

^ so its passed an MOT but you have loads of people flashing you?

Doesn't that mean they are not set up properly? As long as you can see it doesn't matter blinding the driver who's coming towards you?

Sometimes common sence should tell you that's not right??

yeah you do have a good point... but on the day of the MOT MB alligned my lights for me as they were apparently slightly un aligned? :S! wasnt too bad before then so im not sure

Looking around for a reliable supplier of a can-bus compatible (they ALL say they are!) kit for my '09 CLS.......I was looking for a Grand Edition but a cracking low mileage Indium Grey Met version with a lovely cream leather interior popped up in my sights so bought on Thursday, but I had every intention of installing a good HiD kit as they use proj lamps and have wash system, the only bug is the manual levelling instead of auto, but I consider myself a responsible driver and always have demanded the best in night vision and that means also making sure they are aimed perfectly too!

Anyhoo, as I still cannot PM as yet....anyone had experience of a good supplier and kit that actually works and appears to be well made also?

If it is of any consequence this exact type of post appears on almost every car forum and there is always the polarised view.

They pass the "Ministry of Transport" legal requirements for light quality, quantity and aim, they pass. so, they cannot be illegal by definition.

it is illegal to drive at 31mph in a 30, 41mph in a 40 etc etc to have fog lights on when it's fine, to drive through a stop sign,,,,,,,

If you have a well set up system are considerate to others it is not deemed to be in the same catagory of offence as undertaking a marked police car doing 150mph on the M1 in the nude!

People get so sanctimonious and preach from the altar about the wrongs of it.

It happens get over it, go on ebay and acquire a life outside of lecturing! If I get stopped by the Police what can they do? charge me with wrongful illumination? its my choice or the individuals concerned.

For what it's worth, I DID ask a "Tango division" officer about them once! he said there was nothing I could be charged with other than unsafe vehicle and retest basically, that was back in 2003 when i first got me a set since then, I have had MOT's every year dealer services, driven past more police cars than I can recall.

It doesn't make me a bad person :)

As others pointed out, current MoT requirements are that if HIDs are retrofitted, with clear lenses, then self-levelling and washers should also be fitted as well.

So not having any or all of the above components is an offense if the vehicle is driven on public roads.

The fact that it passed MoT and police spot checks is not proof of legality.... just of lack of enforcement due to practical considerations.

All it means is that you are *probably* not likely to get onto trouble for it.

Should one have them? That's a separate discussion.... I am not suggesting I advise others what they should be doing with regards their own vehicles.
