CLS mods.

+1.

Personally, I don't like the look of the lowered one and do like the look of the CLS in standard form a lot.

Standard mercs (amg apart) are a bit "old manish" to me. I think they look better with a subtle drop.

I couldn't find the post you quoted re the weight of the Vossens to reply to. I really don't think they weigh enough to noticeably slow the car down (loads of torque) and the standard 19" amg's look tiny.

I appreciate some merc owners won't like what I'm planning to do, but in all honesty I probably wouldn't like their cars either.

I think the mods will improve the car massively. For me anyway.

I bet that's fast...

Seems to be a bit of snobbery on here that you don't even find on Porsche forums.

If it is a vxr, it will be quick. Even if it's a 1.2 it'll still be quicker than your car.

If you speak to a top car wrap company, you will find the majority of cars they do are BMW, merc, range rover etc. They do more ferraris than corsa's.

For the record I have nothing against corsa's. I wouldn't dream of driving one, but I don't mock people who do.

Taste in cars is certainly personal and some makes/models do attract certain demographics. That being said, gentle ribbing is as universal as taste in cars isn't and this shouldn't be taken personally IMO.
I hope you post pictures and report on the mods in due course.

Don't rise to the bait Kev, these guys have had years of practice mocking, just sit back and enjoy :)

Thanks mate.

Some of them are in no position to mock IMO.

I can't afford to run a CLS AMG at the moment, and I want a car that doesn't make me look 50. :)

I've never had a merc before so I thought I'd try one.

Ive loved all my BMW's, enjoyed my porsche, but I'll never buy another audi. The only thing I like about audis are the interiors.

I had an A8 before this AMG, was a close call between S8 or CLS55 as S8 interior and comfort is second to none. Went for the CLS55 and hopefully next week when all the modifications and remaps are sorted, I can enjoy it for what it is, a total Beast

Nip down the M6 to Acid's place (MSL). You won't be disappointed :)

I will definitely make the trip when I get a CLS.

I know it sounds daft, but I want to be without my 997 for a few weeks before I buy a merc.

I think if I go straight from the 997 to a 350 CDI it would be a bit disappointing. I'm going to use a 320d for a month or so.

I'd love to keep my 997, but my circumstances and priorities have changed over night.

My mates dad has just bought a brand new S8.

He's nearly 70! I was very impressed.

Funny thing is, he won't let any of his kids drive it.

I'd kill for a real AMG. Sound like spitfires, or should I say a Messerschmitt?

I don't take it personally at all.

You get it on most car forums. Normally from people who don't own a decent car themselves.

The thing that I find amusing is they all see to have a problem with corsa's?

The ironic thing is Mercedes last few tv adverts have been a painfully bad attempt to make the brand seem "cool", "street" even "chavy"

Having third rate wannabe rapper gangsters like Kano and Tiny Tempah is a desperate attempt IMO.

Even vauxhall wouldn't do that with their corsa ads :D

I wonder how the snobby fanboys feel about that? :)

Yawn , stop going on about having a decent car , etc etc

Welcome on board , a bit of gentle ribbing is par for the course. I'm not jealous of you in any way because you have a more expensive car than me , just kidding around.

I don't follow 'rap' music I'm afraid , and find the whole 'brand ambassador' thing laughable , although I agree that they probably could have chosen better ones.

As for brand snobbery , well we all obviously like MB or we wouldn't be here ?

Quite a change from a 997 , to a diesel CLS , what prompted that ? Two very different cars.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your CLS and will fit in after a while :)

I'm not going on about having a decent car? I'm defending people who drive ordinary cars (corsa's).

I just think it's ironic how some people think mercs are these classy cars that shouldn't be wrapped or lowered when they have rappers advertising them.

As for the reason for change. I'm building a house and have a little one on the way. I've got to grow up :(

Why would I want to do that?

You shouldn't be so ignorant though. A new corsa would cost more than your car is worth.

Thanks to the other members for the helpful replies. I'll look into all your recommendations

I was thinking of a brabus remap, 20" Vossens and a clear bra satin/matte wrap. Not really corsa mods are they?

It'll be my first diesel in years and I want something quick as it's replacing a 997.

I was also tempted by a 535d. The A7 is a bit boring to drive IMO.

I really didn’t expect to get quite such a vehement reply to what was a light hearted comment, but might I now slightly more seriously suggest the following:

You will find any Deutsche über cruiser to be "boring to drive" compared to a 997:

Don’t buy a Diesel powered CLS thinking that it will be “quick”, it isn’t and won’t ever be, no matter what the snake oil salesmen tell you, and how much you alter the map.

You might make it go fast in a straight line but it weighs bordering on 2 tonnes and has a fairly long wheelbase which means a large moment of inertia – on twisty roads it will always feel ponderous compared to your 997.

Lowering won’t help: you’ll just wear the tyres more unevenly.

It is for those reasons that I use my CLS to tow my racing car, not to pretend that it actually is one!!

I don't expect it to drive anything like my 997 or be a racing car.

I just want a quick, luxurious car now I'm getting older and settling down.

Preferably one that doesn't make me look 50.

I was planning on getting a 535d but I've had a few bmw's so thought I'd try a merc.

A VXr Turbo does cut the mustard and beat my current steed in a 0-62mph drag by a whopping 0.2 seconds, but top speed is somewhat behind.

If I do go for 265 Bhp CLS 350 Cdi, that will whip the ar$e off any Corsa, including a Nurnburg special edition.

I personally don't like cars like corsa vxrs, but I don't knock people who do. That was my point bud.

I also don't think making subtle mods to a car makes it a boy racer mobile.

I don't like the look of standard suspension height on most cars. Especially if they have bigger aftermarket wheels, which I plan to fit.

As for the matte black wrap, it's a marmite thing. I like it, some don't.

If it's done professionally using quality materials it looks great.

If it's done by a 21 year kid using cheap vinyl and his mums hair dryer, I wouldn't like it either.

I really dislike heavily modded cars. Those liberty something wide arch rivet body kits look awful no matter how much they cost. But I think a nice vossen 20" rim and a subtle drop would improve any of the bigger merc saloons.

I've seen many nice cars ruined by being over modified. It's not something I would ever do.

Must admit I like a subtle drop as well ;)

Yes, subtle is an appropriate word when it comes to modding - some don't understand it:
