Hello all, new here so go easy.
I am looking to buy an estate. I like the practicality of the E class, but LOVE the looks of the CLS.
After hearing about the 300KG towing limit of the E Hybrid I am sort of resigning myself to a higher tax band car. E or CLS.
Can you lot give advice on choosing one? What equipment is desirable, what is not so important. The COMAND looks good? or would I grow out of it in 5 mins?
Any advice would be appreciated, £18-£25k really.. Could adjust if necessary.
Rob

Cls350 cdi... No brainer for me and I have an e class (all be it an older one) id always go for the cls over a e class due to the shape.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Was looking at a more economic model, 250 or 220.
Is the 350 THAT much better?

Yes.

The 4cyl Diesel engine is quite agricultural whereas the V6 CDI is very smooth with a nice grunt when you shove onwards.

I'd also go CLS but it's a lot to do with what you actually need, the E-Class has more volume internally but the CLS is just stunning.

Definitely the 350. Absolute peach of an engine...

For me CLS

350cdi if your watching the pennies/500 or AMG for the full effect

Wouldn't even entertain a 220 or 250. No way! Couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding!

Still thinking of the 2.1.. Just been mulling over the mpg figures of the 3.0 litre. My needs are for a bit more economical motor.
I bet the 3.0 litre is a lovely smooth unit, but surely the 2.1 engine ain't as tractor as you suggest??
I need to spend over £30k to bring down the tax and mpg of the 350, whereas £20k will get me a 250 with better figures.
The 250 aint that bad?? is it?
And StuartK.. you drive a bloody C63!! Think about us commoners for a second or two ;)

250 is less refined and will need to be worked harder to get it moving what is a large car about (there's a reason MB won't even insult an S class with a 250 engine) real world I doubt there will be much MPG difference. The 350 will retain far more of its value too.

I can't think of any reason behind going for the 4 pot over the V6.

We run a C250 Cdi on fleet at work for one of the girls and it's pretty gutless to say the least. It is economical but in a large car like a CLS it just isn't going to do the car justice.

The V6 is just sublime.

The 250 is actually quite powerful. It's not the worst.

You can get a W221 250 Cdi in Europe believe or not.

My older CLS 350d is thirsty around town but will see mid 40`s at a steady speed on the motorway.

The fact you are seeking an estate which indicates you need the room for transporting "stuff" meaning more weight to haul around plus you mentioned a restricted 300kg towing capacity of the hybrid tells me that the 220 / 250 motor may be not ideal for your needs as it is a small engine for such a large car in standard form never mind fully loaded with whatever you have hitched onto the back.

Far from it, the C250 I had for a few weeks was surprisingly quick and good on fuel too; 204bhp and 55mpg isn't a package to be sniffed at.

I'd still go 350CDI though, lovely engine.

I loved my 350 (saloon) and only got rid because it was too wide to park at the station. I 'enjoyed' the power and torque but had no difficulty achieving 45 mpg. I would make sure I got the latest Diesel engine - Euro 6 as in future older engines may be taxed heavily.

Search for timing chain issues on the 220 & 250, after reading about them you will pick the 350.

If you've driven the six cylinder BMW or Audi diesels, you wouldn't describe the 350 as silky smooth. ;)

The 220 and 250 are both perfectly ok in the eclass. If you want more get up and go, like I did, just get it remapped or a tuning box fitted. You'll also get slightly more mpg too.

cheers, Steve

Agree MB diesels are agricultural compared to BMW and Audi offerings but out of the lot the 350 is the best
