I wasn't going to post this becuase quite frankly I feel upset and a bit embarrassed, but I think for the sake of others who may get this problem, it's worth discussing.

Took my CLS to Olly on thursday for a "health check" just to be sure all is well, before I embark on hopefully 2 or 3 years of happy ownership.

Well, to cut a long story short, all IS well....except... no1 main crankshaft bearing!!! Yes, the dreaded ticking sound that Olly knew so well started just after the oil change. Sh!te!!! Yes, that's exactly what i thought. I've had the car just 2 weeks.

Luckily, it's under supplying dealer warranty (Renault) and has an impecable service history (just had the major, mega bucks service 1500 miles ago) and has low mileage.

Dealer is now in negotiation with local MB dealer to them, but assure me that regardless of MBs attitiude, I shouldn't have to pay anything.

If all goes well, the repair should get done soon, BUT, I'm worried about the problem coming back as I've read elsewhere it can and does.

Seems like my CLS dream is coming to an end! Should have kept my trusty, reliable 211...(Jay, I should've waited for one from you!!)

I'll keep you posted in case anyone else finds themselves in this situation.

So the CLS has known issues... The V6 Cdi has issues... are they related??

Am I best sticking with my IL6 E320cdi as I've been looking at the newer things to swap it for...

Go for the 220cdi - - solid as a rock.

what is the mileage?

estimated cost of repair?

Sorry to hear you have a problem with your cls already(especially after looking forward to getting it for so long),hopefully the supplying dealer will get it sorted(without cost to you)asap,do you know if the crankshaft bearing failure is just a v6 tdi problem or is it related to petrol engines too?

Mileage 50K

Don't know the estimate yet as it needs to be booked in with MB dealer at Kidderminster for the diagnoses. Interestingly, when the supplying dealer spoke to them, they denied that it was a known fault...

Anyway, I should get it over to them sometime next week, just subject to supplying dealer sorting out the appointment.

To be honest I don't know. In fact until Olly told me about it, I didn't know it existed as a fault! But, from what I've read today, it seems like V6 diesel specific.

Maybe a petrol would've been a better bet.....or a 212 coupe 220cdi?

The way I feel now, I might chop the car in once it's repaired...

Update!

Just spoke to the supplying dealer who have booked it in for 30th January for both diagnosis and repair at MB Kidderminster.
All being well, I should simply drop it off to them, collect my nice Renault courtesy car and then collect the car, repaired, about a week later, with no cost to me.

We'll see.....
(so far, i have to say, Jaybea Motors have acted very, very well...)

It's a shame you feel that way about it as disapointing as it is,did olly say the problem is likely to resurface in the future even after the repair?(if so why not see if you can change it for the v6 petrol cls?)

No, Olly didn't say it would come back, but I've read of a few cases where it has and I'm not sure I want this hanging over my head, skimming off the joy.

I could of course enjoy it UNTIL it happens again (Olly said it was a very good CLS in all other respects), then repair it again (at MBs expense) and get rid...

Right now I'm just upset.... see how I feel after it's repaired..

Sorry to hear about your problem, you must be gutted. Hope it gets resolved OK without too much hassle or cost.

Always hard to make a decision when you feel let down, shame you didn't know about the known fault before deciding on a v6 diesel, personally i would keep the car once it's been repaired at mb's cost-especially knowing that olly's given the car the thumbs up in all other departments.

It does sound bad that after 50,000 miles which isn't much really the car needs what I guess would be £1000 / £1500 bill if you were paying from Mercedes?

Then the problem ***'s had with his V6 Cdi.

I would like to know if these problems are related to the V6 cdi's or all of them? it seems petrol assuming you don't do silly miles is the way to go?

Cheaper to buy
less likley to have these bills?
MPG wise... well getting 40mpg but spending a lot in maintenance could be the same as 25 in a v8 say that doesn't fail...

??

I agree. I do about 12K a year, spread between two cars, so actually petrol might have worked out better. I did this comparison back in the summer when I was looking at a CLS350 but in the end was convinced (by wifey and my accountant!) that the diesel would be better. Have to say, when it works, it's a cracking engine, so smooth and effortlessly powerful. Such a shame MB didn't get it right!

From what I've been reading, the problem is only on the earlier V6s and not detected on '08s onward.

If you mean Mercedes of worcester, deal with Simon...great chap.

Ooops!! Sorry, it's Kidlington, not Kidderminster!! A good old Inchcape dealer....

Thats good news & great service(so far) from the supplying dealer, hope all goes well & your cars back good as new when expected:thumb:

Interestingly, my mate who just bought a Jag XF 2 months ago has been back to Jaguar with it 5 times with an assortment of issues!! Amazing isn't it!

Now, for all you Saab kickers out there, the Saab has had no issues in 3 years! (fingers crossed it stays that way, especially now there's no Saab dealer near me!!)

MB didn't get it right? Speak for yourself, my engine which is the same as yours in the same car has been nothing other than faultless.
