I note my 2012 CLS250 appears to come factory standard with 285x30x19 rears on 9.5” rims. But reading the various charts online, 275 is listed as max width for 9.5”.
I would like to switch down to 18” rims. Should I just buy 18inch 9.5 rims and put 18inch 285 tyres on? Who can enlighten me?

Doesn't it list wheel and tyre information in the owner's handbook, usually shows all the factory fitted options.

Yes it does. My query is that all the online guides indicate that 285 is too wide for 9.5” rims. The tyres look comfortable on the car.

285x30x19 are the stock size fitted to the 9.5" wide rear rims on my E63.
Scroll down for the tyre sizes recommended.

Edit These are the fitment for your CLS. Note the wheel width and tyres size. I would suggest the tyre guides you have read are incorrect.

If your manual says 285 why would you fit anything else?

If you have 9.5j 19 inch rear wheels then I would expect to see 285/30 19 tyres fitted. From memory that’s what Mercedes would fit, and it’s certainly what Brabus would fit.
