Just seen this on Pistonheads , a 36k milles 2004 54 plate S350 for £13,490. Assuming its history is up to snuff and there are no unfortunate issues with it, this seems good value. Of course its not the 'current' shape and we all know that big cars lose value quicker than day old bread.

Now compare this to a CLS (example only, cant actually find one from 2004) with the same engine from late 2004/ early 2005, and you are going to be paying around £18,995 from a dealer with similar mileage.

So the S class seems great value compared to the CLS, just shows how much difference a pretty shape makes.

What you guys think?

Appeals to different people. S class's that are 3/4 years old sometimes mostly come from chauffeur companies so there's a lot of em.

The S class is by far better value for money as for perfomance its more or less the same 3.7 V6 272BHP The S class is more roomy inside but it doesnt look as nice as the CLS

It depends on your budget also, both cars are really nice!

If you take into account the S-class weight and driving orientation (comfort rather then speed or agility), then you can see why they are not the same performance and perhaps not the same price.

There has only ever been 1 shape of the CLS so far anyway.

They are more or less the same to be honest,

The cls does 0-60 in 6.9 S 0-60 in 7.4... not too much difference!

Cls has a top speed of 155mph the S has a top speed of 154mph!

Cls Weight 1730 kg S Weight 1810 kg

Cls engine 3.5V6 with 272bhp Torque 350 Nm 258 lb-ft S is 245bhp 350 Nm 258 lb-ft 3.7V6

CLS insurance group 18 S insurance group 16

So its more or less the same. Give the S class a good remap and it will be just as fast if not a little faster and save your money!

That S seems too pricey to me anyway.

You think?, Ive got a copy of Febs Glasses guide and it booked at around 10,850 with the mileage, with a retail level of around 13,900 ish. Were I to pursue it, Id want to chip a good chunk off, and get a full 1 year extendable warranty for it.

Id like to give the S some serious consideration, its my 40th Birthday next week and i want a new car!, and this one is very local to me. The dealer has a new workshop just set up so is the sort of place Id rather buy from if they can fix stuff themselves they are more likley to sort issues than argue (naive perhaps...).

Anyway, does anyone know if I can assume that if the car has the later widescreen DVD satnav that it will be a TV as well? also is it possible to feed an Ipod into the command stereo?

If I was going for a petrol S it would be the 500. Mine was surprisingly economical on a run and they tend to have more toys. It should have widescreen nav but TV was an option. Ipod can be done. Ask Alfie

Thanks, Im not especially concerned with MPG as I only seem to do around 3000 miles per year. Ive looked at the comand website but there seems to be a bit of an issue with IPOD integration with this model, no doubt it can be done but the costs seem somewhat steep, which makes sense if the unit wasnt designed to do it in the first place. I cant live without my Ipod in the car, its the only place I get to listen to my music without interference from SWMBO.

The S class is a wonderful car to drive and the looks of the 220 series are timeless IMO. Whereas the CLS is one of those love it or hate it shapes. Personally I think it looks as though an elephant sat on it and squashed it somewhat.

Check the i-pod issue with both cars as many MB's even 2007 (and 2008?) did not have i-pod connectivity. My March 08 E class does not.

But if push comes to shove you can record an awesome amount of tracks on a CD if you use MP3 format and many MB 6xCD changers will play them back. I read somewhere that you can get 0.5GB on a CD or 3GBs on a 6 CD changer. And you can shuffle etc.
