I think this myth of diesels being more expensive to maintain than petrols is just that, a myth. I've not come across it in 31 years of cars of all different types.

I agree with this, Iv had a number of diesels and never had any issues and I’m doing 5/6k miles a year. The V6 Merc diesel is lovely in 6 cylinder guise, I’d opt for a nice CLS 320 CDi especially if you can find one in AMG styling

Agreed. I'm on my 6th V6 diesel Mercedes in a dozen years. Flavours include E, S, CLS, ML and GLE.
Beat skipping is something I have never encountered.
