Hi there,

I've got a few odd goings on with my car which I think are all related but I'm not having much luck tracking down what the issue is and I'm hoping someone can help!

1. Steering Wheel Buttons
They don't work (I can't access the OBC, settings, change the instrument cluster displays etc. Can't change volume or use phone buttons). BUT--- If a notification is displayed on the instrument cluster (e.g. low fuel), the volume buttons work and I can cancel the notification with a button... The horn and gear shift buttons work fine and there is no airbag light.

Following some diagnostics at a local Mercedes specialist with STAR, I've had a new a new steering column module and a new steering ring (clock spring?), neither of which solved the issue but cost a decent amount to replace

The button presses are being recognised in the diagnostic software when pressed - I saw this on the laptop screen. Do these modules need coding?

2. Comand Issues
The unit doesn't save bass/treble/sound settings (they reset to 0 on restart). It also doesn't save settings in the nav (recent destinations, view customisations etc). It does, however save radio station presets...

There was an intermittent glitching audio problem which was tracked down to be the TV tuner. This was coded out and bypassed on the fibre optic ring which stopped the audio intermittently cutting out.

It's been suggested that it could be something on the CANBUS causing the problem (hence me suggesting they might be related) but short of going through a process of elimination on each item and it costing an arm and leg unnecessarily, I'd hoped someone might have some other ideas. There are no other problems with the car on the CANBUS as far as I can tell - everything else is functioning perfectly. A full diagnostic print out was done which shows no faults on any other modules but it highlighted Steering Column Module (hence my wondering whether it needs coding after replacement) and a DTC Unsynchronised message.

Worth mentioning that the car had a new battery relatively recently but the buttons and things worked fine after that, so I'm told. It also had a period of inactivity where it started but had the convenience functions temporarily disabled message. It's never been jump started as far as I know. Possibly unrelated and a long shot but I wonder if anything could have 'lost' coding under these conditions?

Lot of text to read but any ideas would be appreciated!

Take it back ask for your money to be refunded and the old parts put back on or do the job properly.

You do have a CANBUS issue.

Ive seen exactly what you describe above.

In this case it came down to faulty CANBUS wiring going into the AGW. Once that was fixed, everything burst back into life. Interestingly the customer had also had the SCM replaced by Mercedes and that made no difference at all.

Where are you based? Has the car got comand and/or a Mercedes ipod interface?

I wasn't particularly happy with them and just wanted the car back to be honest. They said since the parts were from Mercedes, they couldn't be returned. Probably should have stood my ground but I was a bit fed up with it all.

That's encouraging!!

I am in Hertfordshire but I'm willing to travel to anyone that knows what they're talking about and can sort this issue! I can look at wiring diagrams all day but I've got a feeling that unless its obvious, I'd be looking for a needle in a haystack.

The car has no ipod interface as far as I'm aware.
