CLS55 AMG
Hello all
I'm getting close to purchasing a CLS55 AMG. However, a CLS350 CDI Grand Edition has popped up in immaculate condition, 5 years younger than the CLS55, 40k less miles and an impeccable full Mercedes main dealer service history, for the same price.
I'm hankering after the AMG but the [rather small] sensible part of my head is wondering whether that is the right thing to do.....
Does any one have any thoughts on driving experience and running costs between the two? Obviously the AMG is going to drink a whole load more fuel....and I imagine the 350 CDI has plenty of real world performance?
Is the driving experience of the AMG worth the extra running costs in your view?

I was in a similar dilemma with the SL but the engine and performance gap was smaller, running costs turned me away from the AMG (mostly fear of the ABC repair costs) but I still hanker for the AMG version for the noise & poise!

AMGs will hold their value more, also diesel is going out of fashion, would not surprise me if they end up being banned from most major cities in the next 5 years if London and Birmingham become the norm, this may effect future values..

I actually sold my diesel for this reason as I regularly visit clients in the City.

I rarely need to drive into London so that's not a big factor for me, but the fact that the AMG likely to hold its value more is a very good point!

Practically, the 350 would win hands down. Newer model, lower miles and full history, combined with cheaper running costs make it a no brainer.

However, practicality doesn't seem to apply when used in the same sentence as AMG. It's just the sheer lunacy of them which attracts so many people. They're totally bonkers and, to me at least, worth the extra for the sheer fun factor alone. Couple that with awesome handling and performance and you'll start to appreciate what we see in them.

Obviously it's your money and your choice but every time you see the AMG version from the cockpit of a 350, you'll be constantly wondering "what if?". Oh, and they're not that bad on fuel really, mid 20s can be had without trying too hard though expect this to drop substantially if you're using that extra power. :)

London now but what if it becomes Leeds, Bristol, Southampton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff and all major cities? This government seems anti motorist enough to allow it, look at the new speed limit change in Wales!

Yes, that makes a lot of sense. Good to hear about the potential mpg too...I've rarely owned any car that does more than mid 20's anyway so shouldn't prove too much of a shock!

I think you may have more of a chance getting a Unabused cls350 than a 55, The AMG's probably get driven harder and being at the price they are id say some owners use the performance without maintaining them properly.

AMG would certainly hold it's value better.

Yes, I'm sure that's the case. I'm having the AMG I'm looking at inspected by a specialist in order to avoid an abused example. The service history on this particular AMG is decent and the mileage reasonable, so I'm hoping for the thumbs up :)

Do you have a link for the GE as i have just got rid of mine ?

Kenny

55.

The rise in the fuel consumption will be significant compared to anything you've driven before.

The good news is, you will factor it in your living expenses.

Maybe eat & drink a little less.

So win-win either way.

Perhaps put a link up to the 55 too. it may be known to some on here.

I've got an E55 AMG, and I was thinking of getting a newer non-amg model, but I know if always be wondering "what if?" If I didn't.

I'd go for the AMG if I were you - diesel seems to be going out of fashion and in a few years we are all likely to have robots driving us around in plastic electric pods, so make the most of it while you can!

We are all different and for me the AMG is not worth the extra running costs. But I do >20k miles a year and value comfort, ease of drive and reliability over outright performance. Sat at 80mph on the motorway being in an AMG makes little difference imho.
