Hi all.
Could anyone please tell me if auto dimming wing mirrors were standard on the CLS55? Or an option?
Also, is there anywhere I can find out the full option spec of my car using the reg or VIN?
Thank you.

Have you recently bought the car?

You may find that the previous owners did not want to replace the driver's mirror with an OEM one as they do cost £300+ from MB. So they go for a cheaper aftermarket one without the auto dimming feature.

You can source used OEM ones on eBay, if you know how to spot them.

Thanks. I'm selling a damaged one from my CLS55 that had been deliberately been ripped off. A prospective purchaser wants to know if it has dim function or not. I've owned the car for 18 months so i don't know for sure whether the unit could have been replaced previously by one without dim. Is there any way to tell the difference between one that does and one that doesn't (without taking it apart)? One forum post mentioned non dimming mirrors having a plastic surround, while dimming mirrors don't have this? But that was for a different model so that may not be the case for the CLS55?

It's the other way round, dim glass has the slightly raised plastic edge to the glass. Also the should be a slightly lighter zone in the glass all round the edge, conversely the major part of the glass has a slight grey/bronze tint.

This. The colouration is obvious if it's a dimming one. Just hold it next to the passenger side one. If it looks the same it's not a dimmer.

Thanks a lot all, I appreciate the info. :) With this newfound knowledge I have realised that the replacement door mirror on my car does not have auto dim glass, so I will be keeping the old door mirror internals to do a swap at some point.:thumb:

Well every days a school day. I have never noticed that in three years of cls55 ownership. I assumed the reason the plastic lip was missing from the passenger side was because the glass had been replaced at some time!
thanks for the lesson!

The CLS should be without the plastic surround as it’s a newer design. You will note a line (border) running around the inside of the mirror, approx. 4-5mm in from the edge, so this let’s you know it’s auto dimming. But be careful, some sellers try and sell these mirrors where there is a slight yellow/bronze tint to them, it means the mirror is leaking and the auto dimming feature will not be working.

The dimming mirror will have extra wires / connection points

As someone who learnt the hard way recently if you ever need to buy a replacement mirror pay close attention to the fact that you can get both flat/planar and convex/aspherical type mirrors. Flat mirrors perfectly legal over here, but I personally would rather an aspherical. I did not realise with modern cars that some markets still use flat mirrors! If an autodim mirror seems cheap, there probably is a reason.....(i.e the ebay Latvian mirrors) I hopefully have found a correct one from carparts4less for £120, so will feedback when that arrives. Still a lot of money, but I did not want to faff about with rewiring the heating elements on a non-dimming one and as I plan to keep the car a while felt it was a worthwhile investment. If anyone fancies a flat dimming mirror going cheap however....

If it was for your E55 then they are even easier to find.

I bought 2 (keeping 1 as a spare) for less than £60 each on eBay. I can spot the auto dimming versions a mile away. I am not aware of flat or aspherical versions as MB only have one part number for the driver's side.

Brand new or second hand for £60?!

My OEM mirror is ZB2118100421, the one I received was sold as a A2118100621 (ULO 41-3133-468)

As I understood it the ZB vs A was irrelevant, and the 04 vs 06 was just a revision number so shouldn't have made a difference. Please correct my part numbering understanding if incorrect!

Here is the difference anyway.

Both were second hand.

One was from a wing mirror and the other one was just the mirror glass on it’s own. Just some sellers don’t know what they were selling.

I only searched and bought by looking at the pictures provided, no part numbers involved as I find some sellers can confuse the matter. Also the cheap OEM ones usually do not list the part numbers (these are the hidden gems).

I only mentioned 1 part number as the MB parts department will only sell you the latest part number for your car. There are older part numbers that there are still applicable, that’s why I find looking pictures is my only sure way of getting the right mirror glass.

I did the same search and found a used OEM mirror glass for my father’s W210. £40 for the wing mirror, then I scrapped the wing mirror.
