Evening all, so the car went to a German car specialist garage in Milton Keynes today, threw up no codes concerning the gearbox issue, which was randomly going into neutral, wouldn’t shift above 3rd gear and was making a whining noise. They used the correct software allegedly. Anyway they called to tell me of the no codes found, and advised they did a transmission fluid sample, I agreed. I get a call back an hour later to be told the fluid was black, smelt and had a few metal shavings in it. Previous owner told me the fluid was changed in Aug 2016. However this is just a tick in a box in the service book so could be false. Could anyone advise me as to wether or not a fluid and filter change could remedy the issue?! My biggest concern is that it threw no codes up.

Dependson how its been driven, It may have been to santapod etc you dont know.

Id just do the Fluid and filter and go from there. You will get a few traces of metal depends if there are chunks in there or just colouration of silver.

The Valve bodies can be totally stripped cleaned and reassembled but as said do a fluid and filter change and see how it go's. if it feels better run it about a short period and the do a fluid and filter again.

Will do, thank you. Does £390 seem right for a fluid, filter and gasket change?

Depends on what the labour rate is in your area tbh, Geniune fluid, filter and bolts used? cant be to far off id have thought, I had a Specialist a few years ago do one of mine and a conductor plate and plug genuine mb one and the bill was £500.

I was told all items are coming from mb.

Filter around £15
Gasket around £13
Fluids £75 ? (not sure)
Electrical Plug £13
Bolts ? (being changed?)

I'd buy the Febi full kit (£30) and Fuchs ATF (£105) from Opie and do it myself. ;)

Don't think I've ever used new bolts on these but it is recommended to.

I was told the fluid, filter and gasket are the only things being changed?! Should the plug be done also? And the bolts also? If I had the time to do it I would certainly give it ago but I work 12 hour days 6 days a week :(

It's usual to do the plug if it hasn't been done in a while.
Bolts, as mentioned recommended but I've never changed them.

Conductor plates are also troublesome, well worth doing if it has not been done.

You could maybe supply the parts and get them to charge for labour only.

ECP has the correct fluid albeit their own Tripleqx range , I used it before and it was fine.
If you cant do it just shop around sure other garages might be cheaper , It takes about 1 hr to do .

yeah I was quoted £495 by another garage to do the plate. I’m deffo tempted to supply the items and get them to do the work. £390 just seems a tad excessive.

Autoclass in MK get a good write up................or is that where you got the quote?:D
Autoclass quoted 495 for the conductor plate change. But when I asked if that include the filter change he said they could do that also. I thought it would be done with every plate change. Have you used autoclass before?

No Terry. I used MBS in Southampton. MK is too far for me anyway.
The filter is really cheap anyway. I think mine was abut £15 at the time.

I'd get a few more quotes.

Phone few transmission specialists , some local garages charge a lot more than they need to.
Transmission specialists can also do a power flush with special detergent, my old W210 had a a power flush and It fixed the problem for around 180 quid.
