Considering buying one of these to sit alongside my C63 and potentially a future investent..

Do the 5.4 engines suffer any common problems? How reliable is the airmatic suspension and are transmissions reliable or do they suffer any issues? Anything in particular i should be looking out for?

Ive seen a 2005 model with an unusually and slightly suspect 55,000 miles. Has black interior and 18" wheels. Will call the owner and find out some info..

Never driven or been in a 55 but heard good things re acceleration..

As long as it's looked after and serviced regularly then the engine is fairly bullet proof. Mine has over 130k miles on a 55 plate and still feels like it's only a couple of years old.

Raise and lower suspension a couple of times and make sure the dynamic seats work as that's a £1k fix. I had a strut blow on mine and that was £1400 so not cheap to fix.

It should have had sparkplugs replaced in at least the last 5k miles.

I still get a shock at how fast mine is and it still gives me a nice warm feeling when I hear it start in the morning so I can forgive it being expensive at times.

Agree with Greyman63 my E55K has over 200K miles on it and let me down once with a cps failure. Airmatic pumps, make sure the little filter on it is regularly replaced or they can burn out. Have replaced both rear struts with Arnott ones, that was 4 years ago and still fine. Never had a gearbox problem but I get the fluid changed every 40k. If it has SBC the pump is noisy on start up but quickly goes quiet. Haven't had to replace mine yet but they can be obtained from Germany now for around £600 I believe. Engine will use oil, mine uses about 1litre every 1500 miles. Otherwise just enjoy!

Intercooler pumps are a common fail - to test , do 3-4 hard pulls/runs and if car cuts power you know it needs doing - approx £100 and an easy DIY , otherwise an Indy would most likely charge approx an hour to fit

Alternators and batteries are weak points - if it's been sitting. While prepare to replace both. Batteries (approx £200-250) - if it's been used for shorter journeys you may find that's out strain on alternator and it may be wearing too

Brakes can seize - caliper pistons and/or retaining plates can wedge into corroded metal , make sure it brakes straight

Keyless door handles are extremely
Common failure point but approx £160 from dealer

They are a well screwed together car , a very enjoyable drive though a little notchy at slower speeds

Lenny63 - I have a Ml55. Does my engine have a intercooler pump ? If so what does it do ? Is it the little square intercooler at the front of the engine ?

No the intercooler pump is for the supercharger which yours won't have

Had mine about 9 months now (79k) and only had silly things wrong (which were wrong when I bought it and now fixed) three keyless go handles and two parking sensors.
otherwise its great. Very fast, comfortable, and loads of toys.
That said all the above should be noted to which I would also add engine mountings as the torque tends to make them fail a little earlier than on a less powerful car. But only about £400 at an indie.
But beware ...I am somehow becoming attracted to smaller supercharger pulleys and larger intercoolers as time goes by.

That little square box isn't our oil cooler (they prone to leaking and make quite a mess) so check yours :)

This man speaks the truth - you'll never have money if you buy one , you just want to modify it :D

Well I bought mine a few years ago on 37k and now has only got 60k on it so I wouldn't worry about mileage being suspect as long as the paperwork stacks up. As the lads have already stated mileage is irrelevant as the engines are good (m113k) so long they have been looked after. Donsh had cracks in his block so there are some with horror stories. However the cls 55 is a nice car and a nice place to be in, especially when the lead foot syndrome kicks in ;)

For the record, there were no cracks :bannana: which was confirmed by engine specialist! Full engine rebuild and now as good as ever.

Had mine for nearly 6 years now! Bought with full MB service history with 42k on the clock and now just over 76k

Still loving it :)

sorry donsh haven't seen you or spoken to you for a while and was under the impression there were cracks from conversations from before. I stand corrected my friend. Glad your not getting rid of the car and are still enjoying it.

Why did it need a rebuild then?

I noticed higher than normal oil consumption, hence decide to get the engine apart and examined. Some worn valve stem seals so head was rebuilt. Some piston ring wear and since the engine was apart, had the block examined and a full rebuild done with bearings/shells rings etc etc

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but whi did the engine rebuild for you?

hi,

they are no longer operating. depending on where you are, there are a few MB specialists around
Hi Donshl
Im in east london. Was it eurocharged who did the work? Can you remember what it cost you?
Thanks

Yep, it was Eurocharged. All in all, I spent about 5k on it, but that was a complete rebuild including heads refurbed

Would it be possible for you to PM me so I could discuss it with you please? Do you still have your car?
