Car
CLS63 AMG (W219)
So I've had this car for around 6 months, every time I give it some beans, particularly in enclosed spaces such as tunnels or roads with big walls either side, I get what sounds to me like engine 'pinging', a sort of marbles in a glass jar rattle. It's done this pretty much since I got it, no noticeable loss in grunt or anything as it happens, always used premium fuel, highest possible grade, even given a seafoam top end and fuel treatment last month with no noticeable difference.
I've read a few posts on forums, members suspecting their M156 is pinging also, but have yet to see one being resolved unless the fix was as simple as higher grade fuel, I'm also yet to see a post about someone's M156 holing a piston etc because of this sound, I gather they have a built in knock sensor which will retard timing to compensate, so is it actually likely to be pinging or something else? Anyone else currently have this with theirs? Any other experiences would maybe be helpful, thanks

You haven't got the M156 worn cam buckets problem have you?

PM Developer (John) who had this on his previous W211 E63 which he had resolved under warranty at quite high cost (along with head bolt replacement)

is it at a specific rev ? Have you had you exhaust checked ? in particular the cats in case they are rattling. I have the same w219 cls as you but in 5.5k variant and this is my problem (secondary cats are done and rattling)

below is a video of the issue if you can make it out

secondly here is me tapping my cats by hand and you can hear the issue loud and clear

Not sure/hope not, no excessive noise at tickover or anything, I plan on having them upgraded along with the head studs in the near future

I thought of maybe primaries rattling but mine has no secondary cats anymore, had them replaced with 3" pipes along with the resonator.
It sound kinda like a sleigh bells noise

Could well be the primaries. do the primaries look ok (no cracks in them that would
Rattle etc) ?

I haven't checked, but I will do soon, hopefully will be going catless with headers soon

I need to take mine out (secondaries) and get cross pipe like AMGeed

Can't wait !! It's too tame as stock :(

With mine, I had the secondary cats and resonator taken out and replaced with 3" pipe, I just in the stock crossover section before where the secondaries were, was going to have a X pipe put in (bought it actually) but then decided not to install it, reading forum posts from reputable people seemed to suggest that just a 'H' pipe like the stock crossover gives a more muscle car sound and better low down torque than a 'X' pipe. Now it's under the stairs.
