Just back from a wee trip and there is a clung, it feel like the prop shaft. There was a wee play awhile ago. I was told to tie up the bolt on the prop, but how do I access it? It's protected with a heat shield and it look like its bolt from the inside... Any hint?
Thank you

Car jacked up and supported by stands, wheels chocked, cup of coffee ready, twist the prop each way by hand, it will rotate a little bit but not a lot, just look at each half of every joint and so long as each side moves at the same time as each other no problems, also grip each half of every joint and you will be able to feel if everything is okay.

The middle of the prop also has the centre bearing this is mounted in rubber and a little lift and sideplay should be okay.

Engine mounts okay? exhaust pipe rubbing?

My mounts are weak and when you boot the engine it twists enough for the centre exhaust section to touch the cabin floor producing a terrible noise that i genuinley thought was the diff on its way.

Got to get some new ones to fit a service due soon.

Hi Lynall,
Engine / gearbox mounts are new.
The clunk is also physicly noticable, I don't think it's the exhaust, but I'll have a look. Feel more like someting from ther prop or gears?
I need to know how to take the shield off the prop as I canno see a thing with it on the way.
Cheers.

Just reading another site and it could be the donuts. Mine are looking good but as the poster said you only know they are bad when you take them out. Any imput on this?
Cheers.

propshaft clunking???

Hello,
Just been underneath, got the shiel off.
I canno figure out where the play is from, and then the clunk...
It sound like it come from all the position possible:
the gear box where the prop is attached
the universal joint
the diff...
Would that be the carrier bearing mount as it look really easy to move the prop up and down vertically, like the mount is really "soft"?
Any solution to pin point out where it would be?
Thank you.

Probably rubber propshaft couplings worn.....you need to get it up in the air and inspect them

I looked at them, but apparently they need to be taken out as shown on this picture as the bolts are hidding the cracks...
Just back and I feel the worse, could be the diff as it as already a wee leak and it look like it got numbers on it, like it come from a scrapper
and the uni joint
and the gearbox as the S/W was stuck on W for who knows how long, and this is apparently bad for the box... :(
It sound like all are going or are already south...

It would be best to replace the two donuts while you’re at it, the one near the gearbox fairs the worst.

The prop shaft centre bearing is housed inside the rubber mount in my picture, which is the condition that it was in when replaced. The new rubber will feel firm when pushed up and down.

This is a W202 yours might be much the same.

Ref the donuts if they appear good and have no visible splits i would say they are fine.

You could try prying them around with a screwdriver but pretty sure no splits so ok.

The coffe is very important as you take it outside with you, do the job then curse when you realsie you have let it go cold!

Check your rear subframe bushes too. These are a common weak point on the 210 causing your exact symptoms.

its helping. Thanks Dec.
Just back from the repair centre, they only found out that the clunk might be only the splin in the shaft that is worned. Heavy grease was recommended to put inside just to lower the "clunk".

Thank you.
Any pictures as I don't know what to look for. Sorry.
Thank you.

You can just see the front bushs through the back wheels at the front of the arch.

The pic is of the rear bushs you can just see the head of the silver bolt hanging down, top left quarter of the pic.

Front bush rubbish pic sorry:)

Just visible bottom right side of arch.

I have a new genuine pair of bushs in my garage if you are interested, i bought them for mine as was convinced this was the clunk.

Mines covered in waxoyl easier to see when just dirty!
