Clunky gear shift on W124

My dear old W124 300d Estate was "kissed" by a Land Rover and the front os wing is now well and truly modified, as is the leading enge of the drivers door.
Luckily there damage to the steering gear or bonnet.
Anyhow - Since this 2mph shunt the car gives hard gear shifts.
I've checked the tran fluid and all is well, indeed it was renewed 6 months ago.
Could this little shunt have fractured or disturbed a vacuum pipe along that side of the car, anything on that side that may be the cause ?

Thanks Hugh

AFAIK there's a mechanical linkage related to gearbox changes mounted on the top of the engine. There was a long thread about this some time ago. My bet is that it's either broken or gone out of adjustment . Should not be too difficult to repair/ adjust?

Depending upon exactly which setup is installed, there may be a so-called vacuum amplifier or pressure convertor unit on the offside inner wing which is used for gearbox control. I would check this to make sure that the part is still intact, and all its pipes are still there.

A major leak anywhere in the vacuum system will tend to reduce the vacuum level at the gearbox and make the shifts harder, so, don't restrict yourself to checking just the gearbox circuit itself.

Although this piccie is for an E300D, which may be later car than yours,

Item 101 on the LH piccie is the pressure convertor.

I've found a loose black plastic pipe that is connected to what I hope is the vacuum unit.
The unit is located below and to the front of the EGR.
I've blown down the pipe and air is emitted from what looks to be an air release valve on this unit......but where does the other end connect to ?

This may be a pipe for the non working cruise control...very handy.
But my main concern is the damned harsh gear shift after the Land Rover modified my wing and door..........easy fix but a pain in the ****
Desperate for a wing and door Nautic Blue.
Thanks Hugh

Engine is the 6 cylinder M606 - 1994 W124 Est 300

Hi Grober, I'm bamboozled as to where the black plastic pipe fits...any thoughts ?

Please post up just the first six numbers of your chassis number - it should read 124xxx - the numbers corresponding to the three x's allow the model of the car to be identified - there are lots of variants.

From this, it may be possible to find the appropriate vacuum diagram for your engine/gearbox, and thus identify how the vacuum system is connected together.

Unless it's an aftermarket cruise control, it isn't vacuum operated.

The device you describe, ahead and below the EGR sounds like the pressure convertor - does it look like the one in the link I posted?

Thanks the numbers are W124191
Will have another look at your diagram and let you .
I can't quite suss out how to post a picture on this forum, but I'll keep on trying.

I've managed to put the pictures in "My Album"
Really would appreciate if you can have a look.......titled HELP....how appropriate

Thanks the numbers are W124191

That's handy - it's the same as mine.

These piccies, particularly the left hand one should describe your system.

The pipe from the top centre of the pressure convertor is in the same circuit as the transmission's modulator valve.
