But there may have been two techy's involved, one on each side, and perhaps an apprentice to 'fetch and carry' tools, equipment and parts.

there was one techy doing the job never even had to remove the road wheels
watched through the view window he could have done the 4 springs in less than a hour

it's easy to change the springs with proper mercedes spring compressors as u don't need to touch the shocks.

Does anyone know where i can hire the Mercedes style spring compressor from? I'm in Guildford (S/E). I got myself a set of slightly lower springs and judt went to fit them but my normal spring compressors don't fit at all. I know they are VERY expensive to buy (£800ish) so i'm not up for that.

Pm Jimmy, he has or had a set of spring compressors that he hired out to club members

I found his posts about it but he's selling/sold them. Last month he said he was going to ebay them but didn't put a link to it or any info like item No. :( All i can find is general hire places like HSS but they don't do stuff as specialised as this. I've heard of people hiring normal compressors but i damned if i can even find one of these places.

Only the special MB spring compressor will do the job, anything else is dangerous. I did sell the tool to another member, because although there was alot of interest from members to hire it they all seemed too shy to contact me.

Search for Mercedes spring compressor on ebay, they come from the USA

I'm still alive, I've used them on mercs and BMW's. In fact Merc springs seem under a lot less tension than Mcpherson strut types used on most cars.

Your 'normal' spring compressor will not fit and is not strong enough to do the job, trust me, I have tried!!

It is possible to change springs without any compressor but you really need a 4 post ramp, a large axle stand and a helping hand. You need to drop the complete wishbone assembly, drop the srpring out and then push it all back up. It's not easy but I have done it once but much easier and safer with the proper tool.

This is the type of thing you need:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Coil-Spring-Compressor-1801_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35625QQitemZ4598677558QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD2V

It operates through the middle of the spring, on MB's there is not room on the outside of the spring to get a normal compressor on it, the wishbones are designed in such a way to use this special tool.
