Hi all I’ve got a 2010 E220 cdi blue efficiency automatic.
Recently when I start first time in the morning and engage drive the car tries to go forward but stalls. After re-starting the same thing happens. Does the same if I select reverse. Even if I use higher revs I get the same problem.
Once the car is warm everything’s fine.
Can anyone help with this?
TIA

Get the codes read is the first place to start - anything else is wet finger in the air guesswork

Could be torque converter related. Whats the mileage and service history like on the car, has the gearbox ever been serviced?

It does sound like a problem with the fast idle. In the old days of mechanical fuel injection this was controlled by an identifiable cold start unit and even an extra injector but is likely to be ECU controlled these days.

Have you tried.

Allowing the car to warm up for another couple on minutes before putting it in gear. Does another minute or two make a difference ?

Slightly blipping the throttle the moment it goes into gear (with the other foot carefully covering the brake)

Hi and yes I have tried what you suggested but still the same problem for a few minutes until the engine warms up. Only behaved like this recently.

My S204 acts the same once the outside air temperature is around 0c. first thing in the morning. It is a pain in the ar**!
But I worked around the problem by reversing into the garage so that it drives out forward (more like launches) and . drive the 20 yards or so to the road, modulating the brake pedal gently. Once at the gate of my property everything is quite normal.
It helps if you wait a couple of minutes for the engine cold start revs to drop down below 1,000.

So just to finish this thread and for benefit of others the problem was a sticky torque converter solenoid valve. My local transmission specialist changed the solenoid valve, new filter oil and gasket which seems to have cured the problem.
