In a moment of madness! I purchased from e*ay a Comand unit from an S class Part No. A220 820 48 89, it cost me £204.
I have a 1997 E320 Avantgarde Estate which I am going to fit it to. Apart from the obvious problem of having to modify the dash (I am an aircraft technician so cutting, fabricating and making fit is OK for me) can you foresee problems I will need to think about before I start.
Also, while the dash is in bits, can I modify my air con to the digital display? If so, has anybody got a "how to"?

Many thanks

Brave man .... can't wait to see pictures when its fitted.

I'm guessing you may need a canbus adapter to make it work .... but not certain. Don't know of anybody who's done this before. Are you sure there is physical space in the dash for it to fit ?

S.

I think it will be close!

That was one of the reasons I was thinking about doing the digital Air Con control as well, may give me a little more room.

Was thinking I would need a canbus adaptor, and I would imagine several other bits as well.

Will post pics if it all happens.

I like a challenge! (or am I just dumb!!)

I doubt the unit will fit.

The 2.5 refers to the 2.5 din space the unit takes up. A single din is a regular cd player or similar.

It will prob fit up and down , but its the width thats going to be tight.

It would be soooo much easier to cut your losses and just get a comand 2.0

You can hot wire the unit into the car and let it ride on the passenger seat. At least then you may evaluate the canbus response.

Before I start hacking my dash to bits I want to ensure the unit works OK.

Can anybody give me a quick tutorial on hot wiring it into the car?

At present I have the optional Sony head unit and 10 CD autochanger.

What will I need and what is a canbus adaptor?

The command unit I have is a Q4 from 2001.

Cheers, :)

I belive the comand 2.5 is wired totally differently from the comand 2.0. Speed pulses come in from different places and the power supply is different - if you plug in the power iso it will fit but without a dedicated S class comand wiring loom the standard plug only powers 1/2 the unit. I too doubt you wil get it to work. I'd stick it back on ebay and go for a proper comand 2.0. I think Braybrooks retrofit comand 2.5 as well as 2.0 and they must be worth a call to see if what you want to achive is doable in the first place. If it then go for it. As you say - it will one heck of a challange.

I cant find the link now, but will post it when I do to a guy who retrofitted a 2.5 into a V class, so I cant think the wiring will be much of a problem.

Cant get my head round CanBus and whether my car has it or not. (1997 E320) and if it doesnt, what I need to buy.

if your car has canbus connected to the head unit you will see a pair of wires 1 brown & 1 brown/red - if you have a multifunction steering wheel - you def have canbus , if not you dont.
