Not my weekend, just picked up my CLK350 cab, nice car, apart from the Comand. No DVD playback, No MP3. And found out no phone pre wire.

So what is the difference between my comand in the CLK 55 plate, and the Comand in my old 04 plate E class? The units look the same, really miss the ability to use CD's with stacks of MP3's on. Looks like another fork out for the iPod kit.

Yep, sadly the CLK comand does not play MP3's. The ipod kit is the only way to get a fully integrated MB system controllable from the steering wheel.

Phone pre-wire can be retrofitted if you wanted it. You can then use an iphone phone cradle with an ipod kit interfaced together to have phone and ipod all in one device.

Thanks Alfie, will be in touch ;)

Does the Ipod kit play MP3's ?

Or only the apple default file format AAC ?

Thanks.................:)

It only hooks up to an ipod/iphone. Not sure how you would get an ipod to play an MP3 file! I thought when you imported an mp3 into itunes it converted it to AAC.

Just import the MP3 into iTunes, as an MP3, and then sync - plenty of the 3000+ tracks I have are MP3 on my iTouch. There is the option within iTunes to convert to AAC (can't recall if it's a default or not) but certainly it's not a requirement

Thats true AAC not a requirement, all my music on my Ipod is in mp3 format not AAC, just makes things so much simpler when burning mp3 cd's, transfering music to other players etc..

Thanks for the info guys. Maybe I will have to reluctantly go down the IPOD route if I want to have a player added to my COMAND.

However what would be REALLY nice is if I could have one of the new COMAND units with an SD slot. Now that idea really does appeal.

I went the other way and convert all my mp3's to AAC as i think the sound is of better quality. Although it uses more bytes i have only used 27gb of a 120gig Ipod, and that's over 7,000 tracks. Plays excellent in the car and on all other systems in the home.

The SD card slot on them is only limited to 2GB. Doesnt accept SDHC.

A great idea spoiled by lack of foresight.
Still, 2GB still gives you around 500 tracks, and SD cards are quite small.
