We have recently had two customers come in with Comand units that have got excessively hot and fried some of the internals.

This applies to the NTG4 / 4.5 systems.

Some people claim that the fans are not needed when retrofitting comand to the W207/W212/W204 cars. Rubbish. If they were not needed why would Mercedes go to the trouble of installing them at the factory. Some people have even been told the fans are only needed in Europe where its hotter! So why do Mercedes fit the fans to cars sold in Scandinavia? Sadly there really is a load of rubbish being spouted by some in this regard.

If you are going to retrofit Comand then do it right. Do it as Mercedes would have done it from the factory. fit the fans, looms, vents etc. Make it look right and make it perform right.

Totally agree.

I retrofitted NTG2.5 in a W211 and that would go into a sort of limp mode if played loud for too long, it would play at a reduced volume until it cooled down.

I fitted a silent but high powered fan in front of the one on the unit and that sorted it, but if I hadn't it would have fried the unit before too long.

These things are PCs almost, and you wouldn't build a new PC and not put a fan on it.
