Just installed a Comand 2.0 W203 supplied by Steve at http://www.mbenznl.com. All was very straight forward, minor head scratching to begin with!

If anyone is interested I'll put up a web page of pics and a talk through of how I did it. I've been searching the net for the past 2 weeks to gather all the info I needed, most of it was in the forums. What I didn't find was a blow by blow account of how to remove the trim that you need to remove in order to get the Audio 10 out and the Comand in. This page has a link to a workshop manual that describes it but there's no accounting for the first timer. http://home.earthlink.net/~phdwebsite/COMAND 2.0.htm.

If there is enough interest I'll put the page up.

Regards

Please do post it!!! Any info on special tools needed is also helpful. :D

Hi All

I realise there are a lot of details out there for technical installation of the Comand ( I used the sites mentioned!), but the problem I had was finding clear instructions for getting the gear lever, wood trim etc. off for a new shape CLK320 without breaking it! Most competent car enthusiast probably wouldn't have a problem, but I've got no experience and a £44K car that I didn't want to break, I just thought there might be others out there like me.

Regards

None of us want to break our consoles, even us poor W203 owners. If you don't have the mechanical skills then the damage you cause may outweigh the benefits. That's where you need someone like Steve to come to your area and install it for you.

Hi Karlos
I'm interested in fitting comand to a 209, have you details of where to source and how much etc.

thanks

Depends on the year W209, the new 2005, at least in the States uses the new DVD nav that Steve can't get yet. If it's the older style nav like those used in the 2003/2004 W209 then yes, Steve has those and he provides instructions and tools you need. Don't know what Steve charges but they tend to go for $1,000 U.S. on ebay, give or take $100. Here's a link to a W203 install but a W209 (both non-2005) is the same.

thanks Darrelr for the advise.. and Diesel Benz for the link...
but checking the link I have two questions: one more fundamental than the other:
1. as I have a w209 facelift do I really need to purchase an adapter to my wiring loom..
2. the description for the retrofit show pictures for a CLK with square central air-vent that are in direct contact with the front plate housing the comand/radio unit. however My central air-vent are round. is there a definitive guide to explain how to retrofit a comand on these? or is it the same.

PS: I have received my second hand comand.. very excited to fit it. but I am a bit shared back the fact of doing it myself or by asking a professional from mercedes to do it ( i will call them to have a quote)

thanks

Right.

Fitting a Comand Unit to a 209 CLK is one of the easiest tasks you can do.

If you look at the Comand website there is a how-to on the install.

The hardest piece to get your head around is removing the upper switch block.

This is levered from the left hand side via the cup holder opening and eased out on the right hand side with a pulling tool. If you get real lucky the right hand side will pop free when you manhandle the left side

The other thing to remember is that you need to site a GPS antenna. Some peeps fit it into the cavity above the Comand and others (more correctly) remove the instrument cluster and attach the antenna in free space there.

Once it is all in, you are likely to need STAR coding to enable features like pointy navigation arrows.

PS if you have the right system you shouldn't need an adaptor...

I retrofitted COMAND and Ipod interface to my 2008 W209.

How straightforward it is depends on whether the MOST fibre optics are already present in the car, and, if it is a 2nd hand COMAND, whether or not the car it came from had this present.
It will be present if you have phone pre-wire, CD Changer, Linguatronic, etc.

If not, it is not a showstopper, but you will need extra bits and also to have the car coded on a STAR machine before the unit will work at all, whereas if it is present, then you should be able to get the COMAND unit working, and only need coding to enable the directions in the speedo display.

good info and instructions are available here: Mercedes Electronics upgrades, installation and retrofits

You will also need a GPS antenna and a DVD.

these are available here:
Comand Online Ltd

Both these sites are run by people that are well known and respected on this forum.

The job is definitely do-able by a reasonably competent DIYer but if you're not sure, then get a pro. Most important though (IMO) is getting your head round dismantling your car :eek:after that, it's just careful step by step.

Good Luck :)
