Hi, just got a leaflet from Mercedes on the updated Navigation DVD, but it's a bit vague :dk:.

I've currently got an '08 E220 with the COMAND system and it is running the 2007/2008 version of the DVD. Can anyone help with some of my questions:

? Is this 2008/2009 or 2009/2010?
? What are the advantages over the 2007/2008*?
? Has anyone already updated and if so would you recommend it?
? Is there any further info' available on the web, tried the Mercedes uk website but couldn't find anything?
? The leaflet mentions Linguatronic voice recognition, will that work with my system & is it any good?

*I'm off to France next week so just wondering how much better the new maps will be there?

Any answers or views would be much appreciated :thumb:

The MOST IMPORTANT issue is the type of service you will get in France.

I have heard the free TMC system is very limited and if I were you, I might think about making sure you have the service you are expecting.

Hi Kaze - welcome to the forum.:)

I suggest that you look here :
Comand Online Ltd
for more info and probably better pricing than MB. They have good info on the updates from one version to the next.
They are well known here and considered very reliable for all things COMAND related

If it were me, I wouldn't bother. Not yet anyway.

The '09 maps are the most current, but I understand that an update is due soon. So if you buy now, you are only getting one version on from what you have already.

I recently updated mine from 5.1 ('05) to 9.0 ('09) as I thought 4 years was a reasonable time to have elapsed to warrant the expense. Even then, prior to the update I only encountered one area of the UK where the roads had changed and according to COMAND I was grass-tracking.

I very much doubt that sufficient changes have occurred across the whole of Europe in one year to warrant the considerable expense - unless of course you have to have the latest version of everything!

I recently started a thread on a very similar topic.
Read it here.............
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/general-discussion/72000-comand-version-10-upgrade.html
As you can see, I am of the opinion that its only worth updating when there is a substantial change between versions.
I suspect you will be pushed to spot the difference between your current disc and the latest.
I wouldn't mind too much if the prices were reasonable.................

In upgrading from V5.1 to V9 the main advantage you will get is the addition of dynamic TMC capabilities.
Now THAT is one difference really worth having.

In a significant jump from 5.1 - 9 then you also get all of the latest firmware updates and bug fixes during that time.

Prior to V9 I think, the updates were a separate disc that was quite cheap relatively, and kept your system up to date - albeit with the crappier version of map data.
MB have now wised up and incorporated the software updates into the actual map disc, so to keep your system up to date you need to load the current disc with it's auto update.

I am not sure of the licensing arrangements if you were to load a V11 disc for the software and then revert back to your v9 disc for day to day use.:dk:

It is available - albeit currently out of stock on COMANDs website.

Dont get confused between the version for NTG1 (SL/SLK/W220-S/W215-CL/W211-E/CLS) and the version for NTG2 (A/B/W203-C/CLK/ML/GL/R)

NTG1: "current" version is V9.0 however we are not stocking it at the moment because we have the part number for the replacement, so expecting it anytime soon - but have no dates. So i'd wait for it. If it doesnt come soon, we may keep 1 in stock for anyone who has no map disk and needs one.

NTG2: V11 came out a couple of weeks back. Many MB-UK dealers are refusing to acknowledge its existance (so maybee MB UK dealers cant get it) Comand Online has it, 8 came into stock this morning. But supply is slightly haphazard, which may explain the MB UK dealer issues.

Thanks Richard,
I stand corrected re the version numbers :o - but does the NTG1 map disc also contain the software updates as on the NTG2? or do they still have separate update discs?

The brand new, shiny, all singing and dancing, much improved version of the maps will be available next Tuesday, 4th August.

The reason I know this with such confidence is that I'm having Comand fitted into my W211 next Monday, 3rd August (by Comand online) and hence will end up with the old disk. Sod's law hasn't failed me yet :-)

The map disks for NTG1 update the navigation processor
The map disks for NTG2 update the navigation processor and the COMAND
The AGW (built in on NTG2) needs updating with Star Diagnosis
The COMAND on the NTG1 has a disk put in the COMAND to update it.

Sods law wont apply in this case;)

You will get the curent disk on loan until the new one appears whereupon we will swap it out for you:)

You guys really could be as good as your hype :)

Thanks very much for this Alfie, I'm really looking forward to having it fitted. I've become a little like a kid waiting for Christmas to be honest :D

Many thanks for all the responses:thumb:

I've been on to MB to try and get some answers but nothing so far:confused:, as & when I get them I'll feed them into this thread.

Corned/Very Tall Dave, appreciate your views on your update differences, this was the sort of thing I was concerned about, it's alot of cash, so I'd expect significant upgrade benefits, until I'm covinced I'll wait.

Thanks for the pointers to the other threads, I'll go and check these out now.

We hope we are as a good as people expect us to be. Thanks for your kind words.

I am still of the opinion that there is a big chance that our author will be disappointed when they go to France. has anyone confirmed whether it is a subscription system apart from the most limited tmc functions?

I went to france recently and TMC and local restaurants etc work fine, and in Germany too where it saved me endless disruption. The roads in France do not change as often as ours, so 2007/8 will be sufficient.

Excellent news,
I was making my observations solely on the information of members that stated they only got the very basic information regarding TMC and if they wanted the full 'monty' they had to pay.
