Evening all. My 2010 COMAND NTG2.5 (in the '07 ML) has up-to-date software/firmware, but it won't properly read an SD card larger than 2MB. According to pretty much everything I've read, if the 09/29 software update has been done (it has; I've checked in the Engineering menu) it should read up to at least 16 MB. Can anyone shed any light on this, and is there a fix?

(Just noticed what a hash I've made of the title... Doh! Wasn't proofreaqdingt it properly...

Should that be gig and not mb ??

Is the SD card formatted to fat32 or NTFS

Yes; it does not work. The MB manual specifies FAT16, but my computer only offers NTFS, exFAT and FAT32 as card formatting options. The 2MB card that it does fully read is FAT32, as are all the other higher-capacity cards I've tried, which it doesn't read properly if at all.

Can you get an emulator type program to do Fat16??

If MB specify FAT32, is it likely that FAT16 would make any difference? (As you may have gathered, I'm well outside my comfort zone in this area...).

Just checking that you indeed have the latest firmware:

The important figures are 09/29, and yes, I do; installed by the main dealer just after I fitted the replacement head unit.

Worth buying another card and trying that with just one folder? Yes, FAT32 is correct and it will not handle an extensive folder structure. oh and numpty observation - ensure card is not write locked on the tiny slidy thing!

As above, worth trying with an empty card first, just to make sure that the folder structure isn't the issue.

Don't have a problem with 2GB cards, only greater-capacity ones. All are formatted before dragging and dropping the albums (ripped off CDs, all as MP3 tracks) into them.

I've tried a 4GB card with just one folder on it; no problem.

I'm tired of messing about; the HDD capacity of 4GB, and a 2GB card, will just about be enough for the tracks I want, so I'll sort it that way.

I use 4Gb and 8Gb cards in my 2008 NTG2.5 (all s/w up to date), they are pretty full (320kbps MP3) and work without problem. The biggest issue is when you first insert them it can take ages to index the content before you can actually play tracks. They are genuine known manufacturer cards, there are a lot of fake ones out there.

I have several cards 4GB and higher; I can transfer all my folders (just under 7GB total) to them no problem, but the head unit only displays eight or nine folders, then displays a row of dots and goes back to the first one again. Is that what you mean when you say it can take ages?

No, not had that problem. The taking ages is the index when you first put it in. Just checked my 4GB card and it has 23 albums (directories) and a lot are double albums. That sounds like it could be a file structure issue. Worth putting in a PC to see if there are any differences between the directory names, or are they too long, odd characters etc. My directory naming structure uses an underscore between 'each_word_or_number' in the directory (album) name. Worth trying - I use a free program called MP3Tag to manage this Mp3tag - Download

All sorted; I did not have to leave anything out, the HDD is almost full, one 2GB card is full of all my most favourite stuff. Anything else (like the Leatloaf CD I just ordered - can't find mine...) will have to go in the CD player. Everything will be available in the COMAND; result!

What was the issue please - may help others

No idea, I'm afraid. I just couldn't be bothered messing around any more, so did it all with 2GB SD cards, which worked perfectly.

Just a thought, but try putting 2 gig partitions on a 16 gig card and see if the hu recognises each one.

The only partitions I know anything about are stud walls... You're well beyond my IT skills there, but if somebody will tell me how to do that, and how to get the COMAND to tell me it recognises the partitions, I'll give it a try.
