Comand

Comand is what MB call their current Satelite Navigation Head Unit.

Graham is quite correct in saying that it is a satellite navigation unit. It's proper definition is Cockpit Management And Navigation Display. (no idea where the 'O' fits into the abbreviation) On new model Mercedes-Benz the DVD system is the popular format allowing movies to be watched.

Numerous functions can be performed via COMAND including navigation all the mobile phone options, radio options etc. It comes with a 212 page manual

On the plus side you also get a copy of the car manual in DVD format so you can read it in the car. (not whilst driving though)

Some countries have the COMAND fitted in the vehicle as standard and offer the Navigation as an option.

I hope this has been helpful and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Regards,
John

Hi Shude,
They just work the audio (CD, video) and telephone options.

Hope this answers your query.

John

Well, John... your W211 may have a separate nav.drive... this doesn't mean that all cars get the same comand system as you have - no offense.

W211 Euro spec DVD comands have (movie) DVD capability, but the new W203 / W209 DVD comands don't! Those comands have an INTEGRATED navigation drive - not a separate one like the W211 has...

Just like with the CD-rom based comands, one would need to connect a TV tuner to the DVD W203 / W209 comand in order to be able to watch TV and be able to plug in a DVD player...

That is the case with the new W211, and some more new MBs like the new SLKs...

Those cars come with a comand head unit in dash (provided that the car has been ordered that way, of course :p )... but that is not enough to enable the car and its owner to use navigation.

In order to be able to use the comand for navigation purposes as well, one needs to install a navigation drive in the trunk which has to be connected to the comand head unit in dash (of course). Then reprogramm with Stardiagnose, purchase a navigation DVD, put it in the nav.drive... - that's about it. :)

Greetingz,

BigSis

Everything is modular with the BMW System .... the head-unit is just a radio & motorised screen (with cassette flap hidden behind!) . CD Changer, TV Tuner, Navi, and Phone are all separate units !

Quite handy, as you can upgrade from CD Navi to DVD Navi just by switching the Navi brains unit / disc drive in the boot - all the software is in there.

Hi,
Absolutely no offence taken. I thought I had mentioned that some COMAND's are different. My fault entirely for not emphasising that fact.

:) I am just appreciative that you did not disagree with ""Cockpit Management And Navigation Display"" :)

Your observations are always welcome and very much appreciated.

:) Brilliant, cracked it. Well done and for COMAND with navigation, we just go back to your original COckpit Management And Navigation Display

To be honest... I didn't bother to check when I posted my reply... I should have, though, as it's my JOB to sell COckpit MANagement Display units!

Hi BigSis,

:) :) You forgot the Navigation Display bit ;) ;)

Or is this just a Mercedes-Benz UK definition for both the 210 and 211 UK model vehicles? (definition was given by Milton Keynes, I am not clever enough to make it up :o )

Nice speaking to you again,
Regards,
John
