Car
2006 ml63 AMG
right i have a c270cdi with starting issues seems to take 5-6 secs to start
been and had the codes read on star
but 3 pages of printout don't mean nothing to me and i still don't know what to replace or fix so what was the point in putting it on star like i was told just another waste of money if you ask me
i thought the whole point of the star system is to tell me what to get fixed on the car

this problem is really doing my head in now the car can't be trusted to drive anywhere as sometimes when engine is hot it don't start at all
and i am going on holiday with it 1st week in sept i need it sorted
can anyone help me
i have replaced maf ,air filter ,fuel filter
i do not want to keep spending money on stuff it could or could not be

Might help if you put the codes up here and people could tell you what they mean?

It would be a start to helping you.

hi i have just put them on another thread but here they are also

What did the STAR operator suggest was the problem ?

Surely he didn't just hand over the printout without offering an opinion ?

Could be a faulty CPS (crank position sensor ) which breaks the circuit when hot and hence the car won't start and when it cools , it all starts working again.

My neighbour had just this same fault the other day.

Until a tech can advise though , you are just throwing money at it replacing things willy nilly.

just said where do you want to start then and said could be this could be that
i can do that myself lol
could be can bus or instrument cluster or crankshaft sensor
he then reset all the codes and that was it
goodbye with my 3 pages of codes i would of thought after resetting them they would of said drive away for a couple of days and then come back in and we will plug it back in

Were the pipe comes from the fuel filter pull back the black outer plastic when running and see if there are any air bubbles. Also look for the bubbles in the short vertical pipe from the pump on the front of the engine. Did you use Mercedes filter?

Iirc the car stores all sorts of faults that have no bearing whatsoever on a lot of other things, hence why you've got a list as long as your arm.

If they have reset the codes, I would take the car back now that it's playing up again and get them to tell you what faults are now showing.

i am going to ring them on monday to see what they say
also today pulling away from the lights the engine cut out and said esp fault had to coast to a stop and restart the car and drive off
now could this be a crankshaft sensor problem

It does sound like air in the system so the fuel is draining back when you stop and it takes slot of cranking to bring it back up. Mine turned out to be the fuel heater right at the back that was letting air in the system. In the end I bypassed it by taking the feed from the tank straight to the filter and hey presto

As sweetpea said, reset the codes then see which ones come back, these will be the ones you need to start from.

Also, considering the number of fault codes... I would invest in this:

Autel

I've got one, it is no STAR but it allows you to read and reset fault codes, both standard OBDII and the Mercedes-Benz specific ones (up to W203 but including W204 yet).

So you can get all this done yourself.

yeah but i would of thought the traction control would not cause the engine to just die

i will go and get the codes rered and see what comes up
i just don't understand what codes like can bus off means
how do you turn it on
i also had a problem with oil traveling up the loom and getting in the ecu
i cleaned all this out with contact cleaner and it seemed to work again and start quickly until i did about 60miles today and it takes ages to start again now

Hi,

I would get the car to a specialist and get it fixed. Aside resetting the fault codes, waiting for the problem and getting the car analysed again, as suggested previously. I don't think you will be able to self diagnose the problem before your trip away.

It almost seems like you have 2 problems, possibly linked. You could end up changing a lot of components to fix the problem costing you more than taking it to a professional.

Of course, it is your choice in the end. But if I only had speculation to work from I would just get someone else to fix it.

hi all thanks for all the responce
i am going to have it plugged into star again and see what comes up
then get them to look at it for me
i have only just had the car and its been nothing but problems from day one
and the dealer i bought it from are a bunch of conmen i have had to get trading standards on to them
this is why i am trying to sort the problem

Generally the 270 is pretty tough - it is, after all, a van engine with an aircon pump attached as a luxury.

There are some very knowledgeable people on here if you wish to persue a claim to TS regarding the dealer - ask in general questions area.

I think that you have to give the dealer a fair opportunity to fix the problems before any 'real' action can take place, or prove that the vehicle is not fit for purpose - leave this to more informed inidividuals to comment!

Hi,I have not had much experience with Mercedes, however,I had this type of fault on a Saab, turned out to be a blocked breather hole in the fuel cap, causes a vacuum,in effect sucking the fuel back.Try taking the filler cap off, worth a try.John

bad start
