Command Online is rubbish

We are now almost 2 decades into the 21st century and, I don’t think, Comand Online is that much better than the Clarion SatNav system that I installed in my Audi in 2001. Don’t get me wrong, the satnav it’s self is good apart from the issues it has with roundabouts and the media player works well. The system is fully integrated into the car functionality. But have Mercedes not heard of the internet? They should be embarrassed by the internet offering. A hand full of apps, only half of which work. No Spotify, google maps or other useful stuff. The only way that I could get the internet to work reliably was to use a 6 year old android phone and a usb lead. Obviously, my 2 year old iPhone is too newfangled to work.

You are not talking about the C350e? This car has integrated internet connectivity, you must be talking about an older Comand Online unit?

For the older ones where you use your phone for internet connectivity, the issue is lack of bluetooth DUN profile on an iPhone. Pretty much any other phone does that, so why are you blaming MB instead of iPhone. I guess against your religion.

Yes MB has later on introduced BT PAN support but MB cannot fix all the device in the world that still count on BT DUN.

I think your title is misleading,
I saw it and thought you were referring to the company that operates out of Surrey.
As my dealings with them have been very positive and I've only ever heard positive reports of them I was surprised.

It seems to me that this company prides itself on its reputation so I thought it valuable to clarify.

I think it's clear enough from his first line. He never talks about the company.

I find it annoying too that in the year 2017 Comand Online is quite fragile. The internet connectivity on my phone is stable, yet most of the apps take forever to load, fail to work, etc.

There's never been consistent behaviour whenever I go to Mercedes Benz Apps.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I do agree with op.

Yes, Command Online, please accept my apologies! I meant to type “Comand Online’ but my autocorrect got the better of me! I’d change the title if I could.
PS I might give them a ring to talk through the issue

I’m not sure that the 350e’s built in internet is available for use by the user through the web browser or apps (eg tuneIn radio or weather) and I certainly couldn’t get the web browser to work without some kind of attached phone. I’ve had much better results using an old Samsung Note 2 just as the internet source over USB and my iPhone for telephony and media over Bluetooth/USB. CarPlay or the Android equivalent would be useful.

I've gone from a Subaru with a cassette player to a TVR with a CD player but you can't hear any music through the tiny speakers and not that you would want to with the engine singing away. And now I have a car with Sat Nav. I think we've got too spoilt with all this technology and I can't say I use half of it in the car.

I got nothing to add, just my opinion. I will go crawl back to my shell now...:p

@Nick Harper did you buy a new mobile phone or a car? You are complaining about insignificant things at this point. This is called a first world problem.

Isn’t that how it is supposed to work?

I played around with mine and it was working fine but tbh I cannot see a reason why I would use it.

I have more than enough media in the car and on the odd occasion I need to go online I use my phone.

Maybe technology is leaving me behind and there are good reasons to have this facility.

I think I may be in the same camp as you, I notice how 99% of new car adverts are all about their connectivity, media, WiFi hotspot etc., etc. Bugger all about the actual car!

Pretty much my experience and thinking....

The NTG5*2 system (which came out before NTG5*1, figure that) and was in S class, then C class, then AMG-GT and the new Vito, does not support Car Play or Android Auto. NTG5*1 does (or can be retrofitted with). NTG5*2 is being replaced by NTG5.5, which does support CarPlay/Android-Auto. Thats a simple big step forward.

But, MBUX is coming in the new A class in 2018 - that is a major step up, apparently with touch screen etc etc. Google "Mercedes MBUX" - theres no more info externally available than that - i've been looking :-)

As to names, Comand Online Ltd (the online webshop being comandonline.co.uk at the time) existed before Mercedes started using Comand Online. When they started using it strangely our google traffic significantly dropped, until we changed the website name to commandonline.co.uk ! So yes we can cause confusion..

My first Mercedes had a radio cassette and you're complaining :D :D and that was extra!!

Haha, ther's a YouTube clip/advert from MB explaining why voice commands are then than touch screen...... :)

Touchscreen sounds like a good idea and on a tablet/iPad/smartphone, it is. But it's not tactile so you have to look at it to work it. So I don't really understand the attraction for them in cars from a driving perspective.

Though I'd guess that a touch screen is (now) cheaper to produce than an array of styled buttons and switches. Screen displays and functionality can be developed, modified and customised at any stage and for any model/trim line. May minimise things that can rattle or squeak. May also be open to hacking too, though all modern cars are vulnerable as the buttons and switches only send a signal to a computer somewhere in the car (and sometimes to one elsewhere).

Being a boring old fart, I like being able to keep my eyes on the road when I'm driving, and prefer being able to grope about (and who doesn't, ;) ) and press a button for something without having to look where it is first.

I find it a pain that manufactures don’t automatically build in “future” expansion capability to ICE, it’s all a bit of a phaff.

My Lexus has a touch pad with feedback, works quite well, if a little oversensitive sometimes. Falls to hand(finger) quite nicely and the screen is easily within peripheral vision, so can keep eyes on the road.
What I'd really appreciate would be a HUD ...

Yep. It’s nice having such silly problems. Humour me! Other than this, I’m delighted with the car and look forward to years of fun.

mine works fine....but to be honest I don't really see the need for the car internet when it is all on my phone anyway. (and only looked at teh MB apps briefly when I first go the car)...Carplay works well but I still prefer Comand....
