Hi,

Is it possible to find out what year of sat nav maps you have installed if your car is fitted with command online? My local dealer doesn't no but will gladly take £99 to update them even if not needed:confused:

If it involves purchasing a scanner to find out I am happy to buy

Thanks

What age is you car ? If it really has Comand Online (i.e the one with on-line functions) then you can find it on the navigation menu (2nd page), but its likely you are within the 3 year free map updates

It is a 01/09/2010 which I believe is on the changeover. Spec says command online but I don't have the online functions but I do have hdd. Dealer job still or update from dvd's via the car done on my drive?

I think the dealer is wrong as this is my option code

512 COMAND APS WITH DVD CHANGER

No mention of online?

I need to know this too. Is it as simple as ejecting the disc from the unit in the boot?

I bought last week the dvd from that site, and yes they work well, received in 3 days.
They have a new address now: Bestnavishop Satnav Updates Navigation Gps Europe Maps

And they sell illegal copies of the disk. We have seen a number of satnav units (mostly NTG4 and nav processors) turned into bricks when illegal / copy disks are loaded onto hard disks. Presumably because the nav disks include a nav processor firmware update which fails and then you have a very expensive brick.

Without fail, all these knock-off-shops claim that no customer has ever had a problem, and there is no contact address on the website.

These guys say in their FAQs "• Wich media i will receive?
• All media are inkjet printed and media are tested and full working."

Inkjet printed == copy disk.

I can't understand why people would risk the illegal disks, I guess if they work you feel like you have a bargain, but it's when they go wrong the fun starts and you can't unpick things to fix it, as you say and expensive brick, to me that isn't worth the risk, I'd rather put the approved stuff on there even if it does cost me more, I take the view there is usually a reason why stuff is so cheap!

How often do MB provide map updates and are they easy to get hold of to do? I read here that some MB dealers often dont do them because they take so long.

Your car has NTG4.5. MB (starting from NTG3.5, NTG4.5, NTG5) have now implemented a PIN system where the map disk is cheaper, and you need a per chassis PIN number (which together cost about the same as before).

If you have COMAND fitted from factory they do 3 years free updates, so you can get the PIN code for free from the MB dealer in that time, and just buy the map disk for the install.

It seems that many MB garages don't do the free map updates unless you ask specifically for them. Current NTG4.5 map is 2014/2015 (you can see it from the bottom of the Nav menu on NTG4.5).

For those out of the 3 years, speak to www.comandonline.co.uk :-)

Needless to say there seems to be someone on the internet who has cracked the pin system but they sell pins at much more than MB do. I guess this is useful for retrofitted COMANDs which haven't been properly fitted so MB can't generate PINs for them.

For current cars they seem to offer new maps at intervals between 6 months and 1 year. For older cars between 1 year and two. But they are a law up until themselves on that.

I have 3 years worth of updates so it should be a case of getting the dealer to do them or as you say getting the PIN and getting hold of the genuine disk

Thanks for the info :)
