Not sure on the operating system but it is only 1 m, comand... I made the same mistake.

2003 SL is the Bosch navigation system. I think it runs something proprietary, but you could buy the firmware update disk and have your chap look at the code on it ?

That was the choice for the 2009 S class.
However, the COMAND first appeared in 1998 S class, and the COMAND 2.0 is a direct derivative of that one. So the choice was probably made in 1995. Which explains quite a lot as to why Comand 2.0 is somewhat out-dated.
