If any members have good knowledge of late model W140 S500's I would be grateful to know what are usual things that routinely fail .

I may go and look at one this weekend as I am contemplating letting my W124 go for something slightly larger .

The S500L I have seen has all the kit going and I can cope with fuel consumption, but like all of us , I am keen not to buy a car that has a "typical fault" lurking under a pristine body !

They are excellent solid cars, more tank like than a W124. I can say that as I've had both, don't get me wrong the 124 is an excellent motor and I'd have another but the 140 is a step up, not just in girth.

And the size is the first thing you notice, especially in narrow streets and car parks. But it's all worth it cos they're bloomin marvellous motors.

Things to look for, some of these I've experienced others come from other owners on this forum and the US one:-

Weak springs front and rear, indeed broken springs! - drive a bumpy road if you can and check for squeeks and rattles - the ride should be very smooth and very quiet. These cars are very heavy and the springs take there toll, as do tyres, check them as well.
Uneven wear could just be down to wheel alignment, easily done at a specialist for about £50

Check all the electric kit works esp the Aircon and sunroof. Both could be very expensive to fix, the sunroof in labour costs, the aircon in labour and parts if the evapourator is duff - a weeks work and an interior strip down....very scary. If the aircon doesn't blow cold it could be the evapourator but more likely the condensor, this is the rad at the front of the car and would cost about £250 to put right.
Check the electric seat adjustment and memory works along with the mirrors and steering column adjust, again check the memory function works on these items too, and the mirror fold in.
Check all electric windows go up and down as expected, as you'll know from the 124 the window switches require a light touch only.
Check the soft close feature works on all doors and bootlid, don't be fooled as a dealer tried to pull on me that some cars only had this option on the bootlid - that's crap, if soft close is only working on the boot then somethings wrong with the door closers or the vacuum pump, a £500 part.
While your looking at the doors, they're heavy jobbies, check the door check straps haven't siezed, they'll "click and crack" as you open and close the doors...a cheap fix but they can cause damage to the door and surrounding area if left to their own devices....it happened to mine and proved expensive to fix.
The wipers should be silent when they operate, if they're not replacements are £65 each from the dealer....the rivets wear out on the metal frames and they slop around making a noise....like everything else.....they're BIG.

All 140's I've seen have leaky rear diffs, I keep mine topped up at every service, to be fair it's not that bad.

I don't want to put you off because if you get a good one, these cars make you feel a million dollars.....get a wrong 'un and they could cost you a million.

I always keep in mind the fact that I may have bought a big luxury car for peanuts but running the thing still costs "big luxury car" money. The 500 is an excellent engine, the power is something else....for such a huge car it really takes off like a scaulded cat....it's surprised and embarrased a few "performance" cars before now.

That lot should keep you busy!

Thanks, that is very thorough advice, much appreciated. I think I like them for the same reasons you mention. If I buy one I'll let you know.

In addition to the above mentioned points, I can add:

Front wings rusty. From memory, new wings are only about £140 each from MB, so no great expense here.

Interior fan resistor pack failure. The fan stops working when this fails. It can be bought seperately from MB but it is over a £100 pounds and about 30 minutes to fit if you have an electric screwdriver.

Steering links get a bit of play in them over time. Easy to replace together with the drag link.

A lot of gearboxes seem to need attention after about 130K miles.

Check all the electric kit works...

Sportyreptile has provided a lot of useful information. Essential to check ALL ectrical equipment. These cars have a lot of kit, so take your time checking it out properly. Don't be seduced by one that looks good, that only needs an aircon recharge or electric seat motor etc...

I know this thread is concerned with the W140 S500 but it's worth noting on lesser W140's soft close doors were not standard.

One other thing to look out for isn't a major issue but cosmetic.

The rear window has a tendency to de-laminate (become white / mily looking) in the corners.

Yes, all good point. I have that problem with my rear window, I've mentioned it on another thread somewhere.

As mentioned above, front steering mechanism wears (as a W124's does to be honest). I've replaced lower ball joints both side, idler arm and bushes, steering damper etc.....same as a W124 there.

The rear radius arm bushes go and the rear ball joints also. But this as as per any car that's getting on a bit.

The suspension links on these cars are really heavy duty items, and very complex) but then the car weighs 2 tons so they take a hammering.

Also, just remembered, look for oil leaks around the coil packs on the front of the cam covers (round black parts--they may be behind a cover, mine's lost the cover both sides), the leak isn't major but worth a look. Also on the right hand head as you look from the front, a leak can occur on the cam sensor....looking at the coil pack it's toward the left and on the inner face of the cam cover (inside the V of the engine). Again not a major thing but a common leak area. Quick and cheap to fix but any oil leakage around the head area should be checked out. These engines are tough as old boots so as long as it's been serviced correctly it should be ok.

Another good one there....service history, unless the cars done a zillion miles of course, check for a complete(as possible) service history. Big problems tend to build from little ones I've found, so if the car's been serviced regular the little problems get caught soon....everybody's happy!

The interior should be as mint as possible, the leather is expensive as is the wood trim (very expensive). The only common wear problem is the drivers seat bolster where you get in and out of the car....mine's gone and needs sorting out. The rest should be mint though. I've seen some right dogs being passed off as mint cars, the rear's wrecked from doing limo work.

Take a good test drive on a variety of roads, test acceleration, kick down  , change up and change down. I went to see a car that wouldn't actually drive off the forecourt, in every other respect it was a good car but it would not get out of first gear...the ECU or MAF had gone....I threw the keys back at the salesman for wasting my time.

I don't half go on when I get in my stride....I'll get my coat.

Slightly off topic but I love your understatement. Short of a Maybach, you can't get anything larger than a W140. :)

Size matters as they say !

I am having a new garage built starting next month that has been conveniently specified ( I don't think my wife has cottoned on yet ) so it takes a long wheelbase W140. I have designed in a mezzanine floor so that when petrol runs out I can look down on my car and perhaps read the Sunday papers in it !

The planning officer was very curious.

Anyway if I do get one , my W124 E36 AMG will have to find a new doting owner.

ha ha nice one, when you roll up in the S500L she's gonna catch on real quick I think. ;)

The E36 is a great car, especially in W124 guise, so anything you get after that will have to be pretty special, a good 140 is a damn fine car and should fit the bill nicely.

I've been out for a run today, been wafting around in near silent waftability....fiddling with the electric seat adjustment as I felt the odd millimetre too uncomfortable......:D

I've been asked if I'm compensating for something driving such a huge car, yes I say, my overly large gonads that I need to face the wife every month with my fuel bill....:D

Here's a good W140 site mainly S600 V12 repairs and fixes.Plenty of pics.
It's important to check the wiring looms on any W140 purchase up to 96,
the insulation breaks down.
Recently I had a look at a CL600 up for sale for a friend.Perhaps the most
amount of car I've ever seen for £5k.The V8's are a little bit common for my
taste, the Pope uses one, almost sluming it...V12's are the way to go.
