I'd guess by an unfortunate and expensive experience

I owned my CLK W209 for about 5 years from new and it was fine for the first 4. In the 5th year I too experienced a lot of condensation on the inside which turned out to be the drains from the a/c condenser being partially blocked, so retaining water. Shortly after this, there was the hint of a nasty, musty smell from the heating system and it was this that forced me to do something about it.
After getting the drains cleared out and treating the car to one of those a/c disinfectant bombs, normal service resumed until I sold the car later that year.
May be worth getting the drains properly cleared.
