Cone filter/ Induction Kits

Have fairly recently bought a 1996 C36, just wondered if anyone had replaced the airbox with a cone or induction kit and what peoples opinions are towards them. Obviously an unshielded cone will pull in hot air when stuck in traffic and at low speeds but will not be too detremental to perfomance. (correct?). I also read somewhere that using a cone upsets or shortens the life of the MAF sensor, can anyone tell me if this is true or not.

BTW only really fancy one to get a nice induction roar! :D

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

Just using a K&N replacement panel filter killed my MAF in 20 miles!!

I expect if I had kept the K&N on with the new MAF it would be fine, I think it was the shock that did it, but I did not take the chance.

You can safely assume MAF failure will be on the cards if you use a cone filter. Budget in the cost and the MAF, then decide.

I used a Green Cotton air filter replacement for 40k miles on my previous car and for about 15k miles on my current car, with improved performance and no issues with the MAF at all. The problem really is that K&N put too much oil on their filters.

I have heard a lot about the oil in the K&N filters slowly killing the air mass sensor.

So here's something interesting...

The Brabus D6 upgrade consists of the D6 module itself, Brabus D6 badges, some jiggery pokery of the air box (to improve airflow) and a K&N air filter!

Not that I'm too worried as Brabus warranty will prevail.

Thanks for the replies, wasn't specifically thinking of a K&N, especially as the MAS sensor has a round intake which means a universal filter can be used providing a bit more choice.

Got a bit of time before I make up my mind on this one, garage who were doing the head gasket thought it would be clever to try and start the car with out the timing chain on. Net result 6 new pistons and 24 new valves!

I will let you know how I get on but anymore commetns would be appreciated.

I guess they aren't going on your recommended list then.

Quietly weeping in a corner at the thought of a Mercedes Engine being started without a timing chain

I bet the garage are weeping a bit at the thought of replacing 6 pistons and 24 valves.

I can see the look of confusion on the AMG techies we met in Germany now. These guys mill around a pristine workshop, working on cars and don't wear overalls. There is no dirt.

You started zee engine vizout zee timing chain??

The main problem is that it was one of the fitters in my dads garage who had just returned from Diagnostics trainning at Mercedes! Clearly didn't help!

Car should be back this week after being with them for a looooooong time, should run like new...well I hope so anyway! I will have to find out how much all the work has come to, lucky I won't be the one paying for it!

I think he must have skipped one of the important lectures!! ;)

4 banger the cone filter gives a good noise thats all just might get 2% bhp at best, on v6-8 not worth the effort K&N pannel filter is best

But more than likely will end the life of your current MAS!
