c320 w203
Hi guys,
Im looking to do an oil change for my 2005 c320 - its the Facelift model if that makes any difference.

I've been reading about the DPF and how to check it and recently had to go to Mercedes for a part (which thanks to everyones help here has been fixed!!)

Anyway, the technician put in my reg and said I don't have a DPF. When I look in the engine bay, the stickers next to my car show 229.31 and 228.51

I thought that if its .x1 at the end it means low ash and that's only for DPFs?

ECP have a offer on PETRONAS and I couldn't find the right one, im thinking maybe the syntium 3000 AV PD - but im not sure if its right?

Just a bit worried because I don't want to knacker out my DPF - but also on a budget so want to try and take advantage of the ECP offer!!

Well if your in need of oil , then Mercedes parts centre will fix you up .No problems then, and you will have the peace of mind you have the best protection . Me i go to an oil supplier and on their web site i put in my reg and its done for me .In my case its Castrol Magnatec .Never used any other oil .

There's a difference between 'Approved' and Meets'.

'Approved' means an oil sample has been submitted to MB for testing.

'Meets' means that oil manufacturer tested the oil but it was not tested by MB.

This is relevant because MB will only maintain the list of 'Approved' oils, but not those that 'Meet' the specification.

See below the MB lists of 229.31 and 229.51 Approved oils:

Mercedes-Benz Betriebsstoff-Vorschriften: Motoröl, Getriebeöl, ATF, Kühlmittel, Bremsflüssigkeiten

Mercedes-Benz Betriebsstoff-Vorschriften: Motoröl, Getriebeöl, ATF, Kühlmittel, Bremsflüssigkeiten

The MB list is not inclusive because it does not cover the 'Meet spec' oils, on the 'Approved' ones.

Hope this helps.

Hi mark...
That ECP link above says that Petronas has been approved!
You'd think that seeing as they sponsor the f1 team.
Couldn't find the syntium on there.

It is very specific to the oil type and viscosity.

You may even find that a specific oil type was approved for 5W-40 but not for 5W-30.

So the approval has to match the oil to the dot.

And even Petronas and Mobil and Shell etc do not have all their oils approved.

So check carefully that the oil you are looking at is exactly the same as the one on the MB list. Or that the oil spec on-line from the manufacturer's website relates specifically to the exact oil you are considering, down to viscosity.

Do you have a sooty tailpipe (not a euph)? If so, no DPF.

Mercedes-branded oil is not expensive.... and there will be no doubt about the spec sheet approval.

I have used Castrol oils for over 30 or more years and when I purchased the Mercedes there was Castrol Edge in it.
The car ran okay. .....but when I went to my indy to change the oil i went over to Mercedes oil and I could not believe the difference.

Engine was quieter and did seem much smoother.

From now on it will only get Mercedes oil ........and it is half the price!!

Mercedes don't have their own brand of oil.
The oil Mercedes use can be dependant on which dealer you use.
Mobil1, Petronas and Shell Helix appear the favoured brands now.

If you get your oil from the MB-Newcastle eBay shop its even cheaper than your indy will charge you. That oil will be Petronas. Just be sure to order the approved and recommended spec.

OK so why is it called Mercedes-Benz Genuine Engine Oil MB 229.5
According to Mercedes own website
//bevo.mercedes-benz.com

All the different makes of oil are in the list with Mercedes Genuine oil at the top.

At my indy specialist there was a huge drum in the workshop with Mercedes written on it together with the spec. number.

According to Opie Oils, it seems you need either 229.51 or 229.31

Car Engine Oil Lookup - Get a Service Kit

Explanations of the difference between the two:

Mercedes engine oil meeting the mb 229.31 engine oil , particularly for cars with exhaust gas after treatment e.g. fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters. Low ash content required.

Mercedes approved engine oil meeting the mb 229.51 engine oil specification is here. mb 229.51 oils are very high performance oils for engines with diesel particle filters and extended oil change intervals.

This is correct, Mercedes do sell Mercedes-Benz branded engine oil.

This does not mean they actually make the oil themselves, obviously.... but it will be of the correct Approved spec sheet.

OK, I concede your point.
Which company supplies Mercedes?
I can't read your link as I'm not a German speaker.

If you use Google translate you can read anything!

I apologise for my typo of 229.5 should of been 229.51 :D
