Why is it that right hand drive Mercs have the ignition on the left hand side? I don't know if all Mercs have this feature but my W124 sure does!

Also do any other car makers use this feature or is it just MB?

I always thought it was so that no one could reach in and snatch your keys

Mine is on the right hand side.
Ditto here - but then mine also has a real handbrake :p

it varies between model. Most older (pre 124) are on the passenger side of the wheel, i.e left on rhd and right on lhd..

140 - right side (as with indicator stalk etc on left side)

114 - ign on left, indicator stalk on rhs....

no real hand brake on either - anyone retrofitted a 'normal hand brake' tpo a 114?

LHD older Mercs have the ignition on the RHS of the steering column and I have always assumed this was due to the vacuum lines going to the ignition lock. probably not enough room on the side nearest the door

However I could be totally wrong!!
