my road tax expires on 31/3/08, my car insruance still havent sent my certificate of insurance as there were mistake son it first and they have to resend it. it wont reach me until sometime next week.

whats sitaution with road tax? will dvla clamp the wheels? car is parked on the street.

and whats this about 14 day grace period?

Buy the tax online. You don't need any documents then. The DVLA computer checks to see whether or not it's insured, cerftificate or no.

Grace period I believe has always technically been an urban myth - however Im sure it would take them longer than that to catch up with you as not all insurers are on the database - my classic car insurance certainly wasn't.

As imadoofus has said, buy the tax online. However, be aware that as you won't receive the tax disc through the post for approx 5 days, you will still be liable for the offence of failure to display the ved on the vehicle if you keep or use it on the road after tomorrow. At least you have the fact that you've actually paid the tax as mitigation though.

Buy online.

There is no such thing as grace period, but the DVLA have no interest whether you buy it now, or later.

Its a matter for the police if you don't display it. It will also take 5 days for it to arrive if you by online.

So you needed to have bought it last wednesday online.

Why did you send your incorrect cetificate back? If you still have it, you can use that, and destroy it when the correct one comes.

The insurance company will fax you one if you need it quick.

Ummmm ....

I just tried ( yesterday ) to tax my car online , using the reference number , and it won't let me ...

My tax runs out on monday , i have a valid mot and i can't tax it online

Umm, I rang the DVLA with the last hoo ha with last car etc and they told me there IS a 14 day grace period.

I've done ours using the 24 hour phone service for some time now ... they quote 5 working days for delivery, but typically it's 1-2.

I taxed our Audi by phone on Thursday and the tax disc arrived yesterday.

Assuming you have an insurance cert. just do it over the counter at a post office.

I do not think that there is a grace period,, this would mean that if someone was stopped without tax on the 10th of the month, they could then go and buy one,, the dates are checked if you are stopped and if you watch the post office assistant they will enter the time on the application

No there is not.

You MUST display a valid one from the day the old one expires. The police will take action if they see it. Display is nothing to do with the DVLA.

They should not have advised you anything different.

The 14 day period is the time before yours expires in which you can buy a new one. This is set so that if the budget changes the amounts, all those running out in that month, have to pay the new amounts, and not get a year on the last amounts. Unlike those who got theirs to run out the month prior to a budget!

I would expect this too. If I may just add for the benefit of others.

In the back of beyond, I did mine online on the Saturday, and it arrived the following Friday, which was good, as it meant had it not, I would have had to driver about for 4 days with an expired one, as I was 600miles way from home over the expiry date.

I did contact them, and they informed me about the display requirements, and that they were unable to advise me what I can do. I had to either, not go, or take the risk if it did not arrive.

I would suspect that the royal mail is the issue, not the DVLA. So if you worry about such things, go to a post office and get it in your hand.

Now, I know this is controversal, but you do know it needs a new one every 6 months, or year, like your insurance, and you do know its due as a reminder comes. So I am unsure quite why people still rush at last minute to get one. They send out the reminder 4 weeks prior to it expiring.

Never believe verbal advice - even if they give you a name. The only advice worth its weight is when its in writing and signed so the originator can be traced and verified.
And that goes for all topics and subjects.

You are very brave handing oiut your credit card details over the phone. I never do this as its very easy for the operator to make a note of the details and either pass it on for a fee or use it themselves. All too tempting for a low paid call centre operator.

Especially in light of the previous problems of fraud going on at the dvla.

It's an automated service - there is no operator.

Unless that written and signed advice is incorrect.

Ignorance of the law is no defence, under any circumstances, regardless of what somebody else may have told you.
