In parkers used car price guide, two engines are listed for the W210 E220 diesel - according to the guide:

From '99 to '02 there was a 2.2 litre with 143bhp 42mpg and 133mph

From '01 to '03 there was a 2.1 litre with 143bhp 39mpg and 127mph

Anyone know the difference between these two lumps aside from the obvious stats quoted above ?

For the W211 series it lists just the 2.1 litre option at 150bhp 38mpg & 135mph

They are all 2200cc.
IIRC the original CDi was 127Bhp which was then upped to 143Bhp. In addition there was a new "economy" version labelled 200Cdi (though not destined for UK), that was still a 2200cc engine.

I think your guide is wrong.

The later engine is 2148cc so although it is badged 200 or 220 CDi it is sometimes referred to as a 2.1.

The later engine (OM646) has higher rail pressure (1600 bar instead of 1400 bar) and i think it also has balancer shafts to make it smoother.

Both OM611 and OM646 come in standard (143bhp 220cdi) or reduced output (122bhp 200 cdi). The W202 cdi was the reduced output version and didn't have a variable geometry turbocharger.
