Hi all, some advice please

I had my CL65 (215) with a MB dealer and they said that the front offside Spring Control Arm and Transverse Control Arm needs replacing. The guy said that the when doing these the struct which attaches to the Spring Control Arm do get seized on and it will most likely need to be replaced also if it cant be removed - i believe the strut is quite an expensive part for this car! :(

Has anyone every come across this issue or heard of it ? it seems a bit extreme that i may have to replace a strut which is otherwise okay but the only problem is that it is seized to the spring control arm that needs replacing.

Any help appreciated:thumb:

The alen grub screws? They usually just need warming a tad but they do come out

I just changed mine (DIY driveway job) and had absolutely no problem changing the arm or undoing the Allen bolts. Strut came free with no problem.

Thanks

mercedescl500 - is this a big job to do as a diy job?

Also meant to ask! - where apart from a MB dealer would I get good quality control arms at reasonable prices ?

You do mean a OEM control arm ?

Rk100, the job is simple as long as you have a good socket and Allen set. I followed the instructions from a DIY which is posted on both US MB Forums. If you g00gle search "w220 ball joint DIY" you will find it, it pretty much shows you everything you need to know. As for the arm itself you can fit w220 ABC arms which are the same as the CL, I managed to buy 2 perfect condition arms (with excellent strut balljoints) for £45 on your favourite auction site. They do come up for sale as lots of s600 w220 get broken for parts.

Thanks for this I will look it up on how to do it. The only worry about getting a used one is it would be very hard to see if it is on condition or not

You need to make sure that the bush and balljoint are intact (no splits in the rubber boot) as these are the parts that MB do not sell without the purchase of the complete arm. There is a guy on eBay who breaks lots of CL and S classes and has a good reputation (personal opinion) and goes by the name of Carl w140spares, it might be worth giving him a shout. I am sure other members here have used Carl got bits and bobs and had a good transaction

On a separate note - I noticed the passenger side (front and rear) was sitting lower than the opposite side. Would this be related to the control arms or struct?
Thanks
