The Mrs has had a Mini convertible for the last 18 months, I drive it nearly every day. If it’s not raining then the roof is down. On the rare occasion it’s up it is very well insulated.

I’ve had a soft top in my life since August 1st 1973 and the Mini is the most fun of them all.

It’s not fast but corners on rails.

We have had a few, the early ones were brilliant, the ND hardtop convertible was the best looking (in Soul Red) but a nightmare to get in and out of if you are over 5’ tall.
Wife is 5 foot and a half. I’m a bit taller.

I'd have any of those....except the KA.... the steering is great. Like a go cart.....but the rest is the usual Ford crap. And whilst there is not much wrong with the MX5 (I prefer the raw feel of the earlier ones) if you are a bloke driving one people will think you borrowed it from your sister!

The Ka would compliment the little 2002 Fiesta we’ve got.

I think daughter will be driving it most of the time. We’re going to split the purchase 3 ways.

A Mini could be a contender.

Matron has had 20 years of MX5 NB's, and loves them to bits. The problem now is that they are all cornflakey underneath. But, like SL's there are a lot of really silly low mileage well-maintained second or third cars around that are looking for a new owner. The owners' club is huge, and the parts & expertise availability is phenomenal.

When the kids were small she had ten years of SAAB 9-3 convertibles which were very reliable. The only issue was a noise from the left hand side front passenger seat: "this is a bit boring, innit?" You'd easily get a 2007 9-3 LPT for that kind of money.

E46 320i would be a great choice. But hard to find anything with a 330i that's still in good order at your price, methinks

Why not a BMW Z3 ? They're not as bad as people think. They're just not as good as a Boxster.

SLK200 out of the question? Modern, expensive looking motor.

I like the Z3 but daughter still being 19 (until July 28) I think the insurance will determine things. Same sadly with the SLK and certainly the Boxster although we’ve already got 1 Porsche in the household.

We’re in the UKEZ as well.

You're right, but it is worth checking the numbers against your insurer for the slowest ones.

Porsche? No I didn't suggest a Porsche, I was just meaning that some people poo-poo the Z3 and Z4 because they're "not as good as a Boxster."

I didn't suggest the MINI because they're more likely to be used as an "only car," so my suspicion is that you might have to hunt a bit harder to find a cheap old one with low mileage and good service history. Good cars "if you like that sort of thing."

One of these obviously, they're everywhere, oh wait.. but still they are great

Actually whilst all the above are good I'd look at an MG TF. They were better developed than the MGF and the headgasket had been more or less fixed by then. And they are pennies really
