Coolant Temperature.

The temp gauge in my 2001 E320 CDi Estate reads at 60 - 65 degrees when the beast is fully warmed. It warms up quite quickly then stays at this temp even when on a long run of, say, 300 miles. Is this normal?

Seems a little low but physically check it with another thermometer to see.

That is a bit cool really. Suspect the thermostat is not working properly.

You thermostat is not working properly.

Change it asap!

The oil is not `working` in this temperature.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will check the temperature with another thermometer if possible but will definately change the thermostat as i imagine it will be reasonably cheap.

Yeah prob a dud stat, they don't cost much anyways so just do an R&R.

The oil temp will be fairly independent so its no biggie but the sooner you can replace it the better really just so that any other issues that might pop up can be actioned.

how would the stat affect it.
does it open at the low temperature?
My own fan seems to come on as soon as the car is started and sits bang on 80. in stop start traffic it goes up to just about 95

Hi

The thermostat controls the operation temperature of the engine. It stays closed during warm up, thus not circulating the coolant around the radiator once the car gets to operating temperature it opens and closes constantly increasing and decreasing flow to the radiator.

Problems are usually stats that dont close properly and cause an engine to run cool or one that opens slowly or not at all and causes an engine to run hot.

Different engines have different rating for the thermostat and thus engines operate at different temperatures.

I suppose that this will link to oil temperature to a degree as well.

Hope this explanation helps.

Not so cheap.

Hi All,

Just rang the main dealer. The thermostat is £33.80 + VAT so is not a cheap part at all. They don't do them at GSF.

You didn't say whether the heater's "hot" or "warm". If the heater's hot then it is possible that the thermostat's okay and it's the gauge sensor that's under-reading. (another cheap and simple job to replace).

The heater is fine. Thanks for the advice on the temp sensor. I'm going to do further investigation before spending any money. In fact i will probably take the car to my local specialist, Robin Lamb in Gloucester.

£33.80 + VAT.

No offense mate but you get everything you need O-ring included, and i can't fill up the tank of my car for that amount of money.

Surely its going to cost you more than that just to have the car looked at

I have just spoken to the local MB specialist. He said not to worry about the temperature indication as they all read low in cold weather. As long as the heater is warm enough.

The thermostat is only £22 + vat with Europarts.
