What, so just the head gasket material blocking the heater matrix inlet Bruce...??
This does seem to be the case. The Pajero takes coolant direct from the engine to the heater matrix then back out into the engine. It does this via two short rubber pipes that go through the firewall. Both of these pipes have 90 degree elbows. It was the flow side that was "restricted" by a lump of gasket.
I also believe that adding the electric fans to the AC cooler will have helped. That AC cooler is the exact same size as the engine rad ans site about 2 inches in front of it. So no real air flow..
