Here is one for the experts here!

I had a look at a W220 Biturbo and so far, all looking good.

However, there was this unusual 'paste' on the top of both front suspension towers. It literally looked like the metallic copper 'paste' that Humbrol do for model kits and that had been wiped off. This was on top of both towers.

Any thoughts what it may be?

Thanks in advance

Coppaslip anti-sieze assembly paste by the description of it.

Thanks. There looked to have been a lot of it, however, did not know that they used a substance like that in this location.

Probably had the springs off recently and put the copperslip on the rubbers to help them slide into the spring perch nicely, or maybe even to help the spring pad twist onto the spring (I did this myself only a few weeks ago)

Do they look like new springs? (both sides) Its quite common to have a coil snap at the bottom.

Even better/worse depending on how you look at it - Active Body Control.

I spoke to the MB dealer who had it in on the last few services and nothing done ont he suspension at all (the first question I asked)

Where's the battery on this car? Engine compartment or boot?

Boot.

There should be no grease in this area at all. It is a bit strange actually

maybe someone sprayed it to stop a squeek?

In the days of cast iron blocks I might have suspected residue from rusty coolant. Engine is all alloy - isn't it?
