Hi All , i have a 2002 ,petrol engine with a 5 speed automatic 722.6 , ive heard conflicting infomation on checking the level , ive been told running engine for 25mins then put car in gear and dip the dipstick to get the right level , and another person said run it similiar time then shift gearbox thru all gears then put in neutral or park and check then , which is correct or is there another way.

there are 2 marks on dipstick one for 20c and the other for 80c must be checked when engine running

Ideally you have to use an OBD reader capable of reading transmission oil temperature , like Icarsoft 980... Run the engine in Drive untill the ATF temperature displays 80 degrees , then put into park and dip the Transmission sump.

20min drive gets the job done (As said you could use icarsoft) , level surface , engine running , gearbox in Park
Then dip

It is actually pretty difficult to say what temperature your box is (without live data). Sometimes you need drive very hard to get temp high (or course ambient temperature has effect). I was sitting in passenger seat when we were trying to figure out why sometimes one W221 was 'dealying' gear changes, and at same time there was of course temperature reading on SDS screen. We were pulling full throttle stints on 4 lane highway, and it took a time before temp was full up... even car was on normal driving temp when we started.

also im getting eml codes P0136 and P0138

You could use infrared gun pointed at gearbox sump.... Will not be accurate but better than guess work

ive just ordered a temp gun so will tackle this soon as arrives

temp gun arrived , looks great but at 11 quid not expecting it to be accurate but like someone said better then guessing
