E280 CDI Avantgarde
Hi All,

So a few months ago, I started getting vibrations from the bottom of the car when accelerating. My car is well maintained, I use it for driving all over the UK and regular trips to Europe for work so I can't have it breaking down due to being poorly maintained. It is on 07 E280 CDI with 240,000 miles on it.

Initially thought it might be the gearbox bush...so changed this, then the engine mounts that were fairly shot....a little improvement but nothing spectacular.

The gearbox had been serviced (Oil/Filter) earlier in the year so I didn't think it would be that.

Took it to an indy a couple of weeks ago and was diagnosed as the torque converter. Bought a used one from a reputable breaker who I have used for years, from an 09 car with 66k on the clock so should be fairly reliable. Had it changed over with new oil and filter as well as the solenoid and reprogrammed. Picked it up and ran like a dream apart from abrupt gear changes as the gearbox relearns my driving style.

Had a couple of long runs in the car totalling around 1000 miles and suddenly as I was sitting on the motorway the vibrations started again, progressively getting worse. I understand the torque converter kicks in at 1400 rpm and when sitting at motorway speeds I am constantly around that so the 300 mile trip back home was rather annoying. Took it back to the indy yesterday and they said it could be the programming hasn't taken and they would do it again.

They have just called me to say they haven't fixed the problem and they spoke to a transmission specialist, and they stated this can sometimes happen where one issue is actually masking another and the gearbox may need refurbed/rebuilt.

Looking for some advice from anyone who might know, as I have now spent over £1k on the gearbox this year and I am no further forward. I have actually spent more than the car is worth this year but I love my old merc and don't really want to get rid, but neither do I want to spend anymore than I need to, to keep it on the road. Whilst it high mileage, it only ever really sits at motorway cruising speed for 90% of it's life so the actual load on the car has been limited.

Anyone had a similar problem or can offer any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Dougie

Dougie if you’re in Glasgow or near, take it to Mackies transmissions. They are proper specialists and have great knowledge of the 722 gearboxes

Thanks Harry, I have just been quoted £1900 + Vat from Caledonian...best will in the world, car is only worth £2500 so no point. Will drop Mackies a note to see what they say. Cheers

still worth taking it to a transmission specialist for a final diagnostic.....you never know could be something silly

If it road speed, rather than engine speed related, might it be the prop or drive shafts?

With that sort of mileage there are anumber of possibilities.

I would want to eliminate tyres, I've had Nokians, still with 5mm causing me to think the wheel bearings were goosed.

I wouldn't fit an old Torque Convertor regardless of the age and miles on said part.

The labour cost to get this changed is significant so getting the Torque Convertor refurbed for me is the way to go.
Last price i paid was £240 at Mackies but may be more now, as said Mackies is the place to go, they know their stuff.

... Had it changed over with new oil and filter as well as the solenoid and reprogrammed.

What solenoid and what was the reason for reprogramming?

I was convinced my 722.6 was knackered (240k miles), strip down, clean and new conductor plate and car has been good as new.
722.6 Recondition Cost ?

Mackies rebuilt my TC for £250. This was on my old 211 320 cdi with the 5 speed auto.
