Hi gang,

I need to get a set of four new tyres for the CLK55.

I've shortlisted it down to Michelin Pilot Sport 2s or possibly the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric.

Best price on the Michelins (2x 225/45/17 and 2x 245/40/17) seems to come in at just over £500 fitted.

Goodyears are about £400ish - and get an excellent writeup on some of the tyre tests as well.

I seem to remember Costco doing a great deal on Michelin tyres every now and then - something like 20/25% off a set of four? Does anyone know more about this offer and if/when the next one is?

Would like the tyres ASAP but I could wait a few weeks if neccesary for that kind of saving. Would prefer the Michelin Pilots to Goodyear F1s at the same money if I'm honest too.

Sorry, I can't help you with the Costco question, but don't throw away the old tyres yet. Keep them and put them on some s/h steel or alloy wheels. Then you have an ideal set should you want to do a track day.

I won't be throwing any away :) - I have two full sets of CLK55 wheels, both of which have been fully refurbished. I need the new tyres to fit to one of the sets that are currently without tyres.

I received Costco's promotional flyer last week and there was no tyre offer. So, you'd have to wait another month or more.

I'll continue to buy tyres there, but I'll get them fitted elsewhere, such was my experience last time.

Last year it was November, and they also do one in the Spring.

For the last few times the offer has been 20% off for 4 tyres.

I thought they'd gone up quite a lot last time I checked - they used to be about the same price as the cheapest online places and the discount made them way cheaper. Last time there wasn't much in it, even with the 20% off.

I use Costco Chester and they didn't make a mark on the wheels, unlike the specialist place, Jeffreys in Warrington, I'd been to the time before.

ETA - just looked at the bill and I bought them 18th Nov 08. 225/50R16 Primacy HPs were £123 each less 20%. It was those that had gone up - I paid £100 the time before. The front 205/55R16 were £82 before discount, about the same as last time I'd checked them.
Your £500 for the sizes you listed sounds pretty good.

I guess I need to phone them for an up to date price on the tyres I require. That way I can judge whether the (20%) discount would make it worth the wait (and trip) for fitting.

20% could well be about £100+ off, I think I could wait a month for that. If there's much less in it, I'll just go for the best locally available price or buy online.

Cheers,

Will

I've never found Costco competitive on tyres - even when the promotion was running - so my advice would be if you find a deal which is cheaper than Costcos normal price, then it may be worth going for it anyway.

Friend of mine always buys his Michelins from Costco, swears by them. I've not used them myself, but he's certainly happy with the tyres and the service he gets.

Did you get a price from Martins tyres Will ?

What size are the tyres Will?

Have you looked at the usual suspects like blackcircles, etyres et al ?

I spoke to him this afternoon - they sounded quite friendly and helpful, but didn't have a price for the tyres I had in mind (Michelin PS2), but said that I could call back in the morning when he'd be able to price them, which I will :)

Price-wise for Continental Sportcontact 3s and for GS-D3s they sounded reasonable, so fingers crossed

The very best price I can recall so far was £512 fitted for the Michelins from a local supplier.

I got a price from Costco as a benchmark - about £560 all in, so they're not way out (about average-cheap) - so with their 20% offer they'd clearly be the cheapest.

I've priced the tyres online from Mytyres/blackcircles, I don't reckon they'd be as cheap once you factor in the cost of fitting. I'm not really keen on a mobile fitting service either (plus there's no need, can get the tyres fitted locally).

Micheldever tyres again sounded quite competitive, but not quite the best price and they're a little less local to me as well.

A few places come out with some right comedy prices when you ask for a quote - eg £200+ more in some cases. If I can buy the tyres fitted or loose for about £500, how on earth can they justify £700+? A few of them claim that they 'can't buy them that cheap'. :dk: Well if I can as a private buyer, surely a large trade company can for the same money, or less... :wallbash:

Sounds like the fitter is telling you pocky-pies. I don't know for sure, but I would imagine that the margin on tyres would be near 50%.

Micheldever are usually competitive. I've been there several times in the past and have always used their top-notch alignment service too, which used to be no more than about £25. They are a favourite with Honest John and, judging by my experience, with good reason. Their response to the one problem I had was instant, no quibble, put it right. I reckoned the longish trip was worthwhile.

I get 35% off tyres at Costco. Always buy from them. Infact just put some on my C63.

Are you offering to buy some tyres on Will's behalf? :)

Last time I checked Costco prices were nowhere as good as they used to be.

Well they've come in reasonably competitive - within 10% of my very best quote so far, so when bought with a possible 20% discount they'd be the cheapest by quite a margin.

If there's a 35% discount available, they'd be fantastic value.

What I can't understand is where the ~ £700 quotes come from? Surely if I can buy the tyres for ~ £500, they can't justify £200 for fitting? :o

Will.

I used Camskills last time for the Kompressor and ordered 2 fronts for a friends RS4. Cheapest by about 12% overall compared to all the usual suspects like mytyres, blackcircles and Micheldever.
I am also a member of Costco and have always utilised their money off offers for Michelin only, but this time opted for Falkens.
Hope this helps. :)

I knew my 2 rears needing doing when my car went in for a service are sure enough the dealer mentioned it. The service advisor asked if he could give me a price as "we're pretty competitive on tyres".

He gave me a price which, much to my surprise, was there or thereabouts. Then he said "each".
